Yet its meaning should be plain and simple enough to anyone who can read and think for himself. It shows that with the organization of millions of previously unorganized workers, through the C. I. 0., a new and independent force has entered American political life. The words of Lewis have power and significance in proportion as they reflect the thoughts and wishes of these millions. This new force enriches American democracy because it gives a voice to millions who were previously without organization and politically inarticulate. The speech shows further that American labor, once organized, will not be content to let others, no matter how do its thinking for it. It will be driven by the very misery which it suffers from recurring depressions to demand real and remedies. Silver-tongue- d Demagogues and peddlers of every kind of half-bakpanacea found a wide following in the last period of hard times, because labor was not sufficiently organized to have a decisive and independent voice of its own. Now the fascist dangers that lurk behind demagogic appeals to the discontented and unorganized, are lessened by the fact that a democratic emerges leadership from labors ranks strong and aggressive enough to express the discontent of the many and to demand constructive remedies. The C. I. 0. has proved that organization on the economic field can raise the wages and living standards of millions. Now that mass unemployment threatens, union organization becomes doubly essential not only to hold the gains already made, but also to provide a solid backing for the political demands which labor must advance in its own and the countrys interests. well-meanin- g, far-reachi- ng ed IN THE MAIL .
