Show UTAH LABOR NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, JANUARY 17, 1936. 4 TRADE UNION DEMOCRATS TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT OPENS 1936 DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN IIQLD PEI MEET FEBRUARY (Continued from page 3) opinions will profoundly affect the lives of Americans for years to come. It is enough to say that the attainment of justice and prosperity for American agricul ture remains an immediate and constant objective of my administration. Will Not Itetreat Just as Jackson roused the people to their fundamental duties as citizens, so must the leadership of this era do its utmost to encourage and sustain widespread interest in public affairs. There was something of the eternal youth in the spirit of Jackson. The destiny of youth becomes the destiny of America. Tasks immediately before us are as arduous as the conquest of the frontier a hundred years ago. The nation is still young, still growing, still conscious of its high destiny. Enthusiasm and the intelligence of the youth of the land SEE EXTRA are necessary to the fulfillment o; that destiny. As I understand the temper of the people, particularly the tern per of youth, no party of reaction, no candidates of reaction can fulfil the hope and faith of that spirit. It is the sacred duty of us who are vested with the responsi biliy of leadership to justify the expectations of the young men and women of America. We are at peace with the world; but the fight goes on. Our frontiers of today are economic, not geographic. Our enemies are the forces of privilege and greed within our own borders. May a double portion of Old Hickory's spirit be upon us tonight. May we be inspired by, the power and the glory and the justice of his rugged and fearless life. The people of America know the heart and the purpose of their government. They will not retreat. Trade Union Democratic League of Utah will hold a "pep" meet and rally at the Newhouse hotel Friday night, February 7, at 8 oclock. The decision to hold this meeting was made at the executive committee meeting, of the league Thursday night. President E. C. Dittman of the on league appointed committees arrangements, program, publicity and speakers. Among the speakers who have been invited to be the guests of the eague at this meeting arc: Mayor Harman Peery of Ogden, Mayor Erwin of Salt Lake City, and Olof t. Michelsen, chairman of the democratic state central should bo allowed the miner in going to and from the place of his work underground, and that the statute should be construed as meaning eight hours of actual work at the place of employment. Attorney General Joseph Chez, however, In an opinion given to the state industrial commission, held that the eight hours were from collar to collar, or portal to AMERICAN NEWS ... chairman. Republican Lineup The Republicans have not as yet taken steps to reorganize the state G. 0. P. but it is expected that meetings for this purpose will be held during February. . .' . There is considerable discussion among the Republicans about gubernatorial candidates. . . . They are hopeful of finding their ideal. . . . They are desirous of nominating a progressive, but not a radical; a young man, but old enough to merit public confidence; one not branded as all politician, but one who knows the political game. . , . There is considerable talk favoring W. W. Seegmiller, the Republican nominee for governor in 1932; others being mentioned are W. Mont Ferry and C. P. Overfield. . . New Senator Talks The newest member of the United State Senate, Elmer A. Benson, Farmer-Laborit- e of Minnesota, who, was recently appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Senator Thomas D. Schall, delivered his first radio talk as a senator this week. . The senate munitions hearing, he declared, has shown how the financial investments of the House of Morgan swayed the Unitec States from its pronounced neutrality policy, and hurled it into the World war. . . . That fact should teach us that if we will preserve our neutrality, we must not merely put embargoes on oil, guns, steel but we must place .a strict embargo on war loans. FAIR TAX ON DIME CIGARETS Modifi Washington. (ILNS) cation of the murderous tax on cigarets which bears heaviest on the dime cigarets will be sought again in the current session of congress. At least five bills for tax modification are pending. These bills are identical in purpose, and enactment of any one of them will bring about the relief needed to save the cigarets, generally regard ed as the poor mans smoke. Principal opposition to modification of the tax cbmes from the enormously wealthy and strongly n entrenched Big Four, which have plowed and companies, jammed their way through to financial success by the use of every method known to big business; crowding down hard upon the to- bacco farmer on the one hand, ex10-ce- nt non-unio- i ' man can, with certainty, bequeath to his family the ability to earn. Ho While you are capable of discharging, like a man, your responsibilities as husband and father, you should plan a LIFE INSURANCE PROGRAM that will enable you to successfully carry on the responsibilities of life as well as meet the emergencies as they come. Someone has said that childhood may pay a man a second visit hut middle age never does. Let one of our representatives assist in shaping such a program for you as will carry out your dearest wishes with respect to your family needs today and tomorrow. Let a Sound , Strong , Home Company Serve You at the meeting the Federation Friday night, point ed out that labor should remember that the entire undertaking is for the purpose of aiding the war on infantile paralysis. War Must Go On Infantile paralysis knows no bounds or boundaries; it strikes everywhere, and this years figures Bhow that the war must go on. In each community, 70 per cent of the money raised is to remain in the community for care and treatment of victims. It is important for labor to participate, because labor participation means a labor voice in the use of these funds. If labor steps out, labor cannot fairly claim a voice in the subsequent local administration of funds. Labor participation means subsequent help for labor victims of infantile paralysis. General enthusiasm for the project is running higher this year g than ever before for a participation affair. Let us cooperate with the general committee to make this years ball the Eight-IIou- ploiting the workers on the other, and taking the whole enormous jackpot from the consumer.
