Price City has formed three segments of emergency preparedness to sen e our community. We are workingwith the County officials and the officials of many other municipalities to further the goals. First of all, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FFMA) has been subsumed into I lomeland Security as has the State Agency But still, there is the national organization, under that is the state and even- county (and even a few large cities) has a county director; thats me. The job of a county director is to seive all of the citizens of county. Though I work for Carbon County part of my salary is paid by FFMA. It is my function to aid private groups, church groups and the cities in for disasters. By the way, an emergency is a bad thing that happens that you ha e the resources to handle and a disaster is a bad thingthat oveiwhelmsyour resources. First we prepare or mitigate hazards to the best of our ability. Then we plan on how to respond and exercise our capabilities. Then when somethingbad happens we can respond as weve been trained to respond. After the initial response we do what we can to bring things back to normal; i.e., clean up the mess. After that we sit down and decide how we did and what we plan to be an on-goi- ng source of information and, on request, will provide speakers and workshops in many areas of family and home preparedness. We invite you to attend the fair and be wise and FOLLOW THE ANT! can improve. Which brings us back to the beginning of the Emergency Response Cycle: Mitigation, Preparation, Response and Recovery. Weve w orked veiy hard in the past few years to hone our first responder capabilities. When Mayor Joe Piccolo assumed office he wanted Price City to get more involved in helping with those efforts. I told him our first responder capabilities were quite good and getting better but we needed help in getting the citizens involved in edup and to that end a citizens cation and committee is now working very hard to bringyou information to assist private citizens prepare on an individual and family basis. Of course, the awful events of 1 brought all of this into focus. But in truth, we have been preaching preparedness for many years. We are much more likely to be victims of natural disasters or hazardous materials incidents than we are of terrorism. So wont you join in these efforts? We want every person and family in Carbon County to be prepared to survive unaided duringthe critical first 72 hours of a disaster. Do you bit, the life you save may be your own. self-hel- 9-- 1 From the Carbon County Commis- sioners up-to-da- The Carbon County Commission is committed to emergency planning- and preparedness.
