Show SPORTS PREVIEW San Advocate August, 1997 & Emery County Progress Back to school signals seasons, rivalry sports Its fall and that means back to school and back to sports. That is music to many ears. Sports in Small Town, Utah is not just fun and games. To many, its serious business. To many Carbon and Emery County residents, the familiar cry of back to school is a signal of something much bigger than kids returning to the daily classroom grind. The phrase means the night air will soon have a cool snap to it, Green River watermelons and cantaloupes are ripe and teenage boys are donning pads and gripping the slippery pigskin. But most of all, it means sports fans will be filling the stands and screaming their lungs out while rooting for the local teams. It means hot chocolate, donuts, hot dogs and scanning the sports section every Saturday and Sunday mornings. means there is something more to do on Friday night than watch television. The real entertainment is beginning and its my team against yours. When two teams come to the battlefield - oops, the sports field - its my town against your town and my pride against your pride. its all over and the scoreboard totals are flashing, we will know who is right and who is wrong- - at least for the next hour or so. The following day after ev- When eryone has gone over the game again in their minds while reading the local newspaper account of the great battle, we all go back to life as usual. We greet each other on the street, speak cordially around the water cooler at work and come to each others aid in an emergency. But hidden down deep in our minds somewhere is that that one really important game many years ago, my team whipped yours and that feels good. Think Im kidding? Many gyms are filled early each morning with aging jocks trying to keep the winning attitude alive. They gather to battle each other on basketball courts throughout both counties. They huddle around television sets on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons while their favorite pro teams entertain. The rivalry surfaces time after time after time, year after year. My sports team somehow beats your team, proving again, that my town is just a little bit better than your town. We also show that we are above gloating. Come Monday morning, we are all friends again, willing to do anything for each other and ready to cooperate and work together.
