Some people think that when students have their high school degrees, they should be able to check off a list of things they now know. Other people believe that the world is changing so fast that students cant possibly learn everything they might need to know because by the time of high school and out they get college, there is going to be a whole new list. While introducing a new type of mathematics instructions in the Salt Lake School District, Wentworth also studied what parents thought the purpose of education is and if that view impacted how well they problem-solvin- g decide how to solve the problem. The role of the teacher is to listen to their ideas and pose questions that will push their thinking. In that way, the students learn to evaluate their solutions. They really come to understand that education is more a way of thinking and a way of learning how to explore and how to search out your own answers rather than having some sort of checklist of facts to be learned, says Wentworth. The parents with this attitude are more receptive to challenging, new and innovative programs. received this new math What the research shows, however, is that parents either fall on one side or the instruction. Some of the parents interviewed were skeptical of the new program, she says. Many of them had the attitude that if you cant tell me what job this is goingto be useful for, I dont want my kid to learn it. Bennett discusses space exhibit at Utah State Fair United States Sen. Bob Bennett recently announced SpaceTalk 96, the fifth annual public exhibit on Utahs role in space. The display has become the states largest interactive space exhibit and a top draw at Utahs annual fair. The 1996 state fair exhibit will present the wonder of space and space science with hands-o- n demonstrations from NASA and d industries and institution. Utahs leading Since the days of Mercury and Gemini, Utahs businesses, military and universities have been active and important participants in our nations space program. SpaceTalk offers Utahns, and especially our younger citizens, a yearly opportunity to share in the excitement of space exploration and to recognize Utahs great role in space, pointed out Bennett. As the centerpiece ofSpaceTalk96,the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will provide a new exhibit featuring a shuttle landing simulator, a mock-u- p of the future space station, and displays explaining the contributions of space exploration to the modern world. Last year at SpaceTalk 95, more than 100,000 Utahns toured NASAs International Space Station exhibit. In addition to the NASA exhibit, visitors to the Utah State Fair can take a spin in the Newton chain, float weightless on a hovercraft, strap themselves into an actual cockpit for a virtual flight, and participate in many other science demonstrations. SpaceTalk is housed on the top floor of the Grand Building at the Utah State Fairpark, 900 West North Temple in Salt Lake City. The Utah State Fair will run Sept. 5 through Sept. 15 from noon to 1 1 p.m. , with a 10:30 a.m. opening time slated on weekends. Admission to SpaceTalk is included with the price of entrance to the fairpark. SpaceTalk is an annual effort hosted by Bennett to bring together education, business, government and the public to promote space science and to highlight Utahs significant contributions to the space program. conferOther SpaceTalk activities include a ence on space policy, the Jake Gam Scholarship and the Bensemi-annu- al nett research grant. Council suggests activities honoring Utahs settlement Many individuals, organizations, groups and communities want to celebrate the states 150th settlement anniversary, but dont know where to start, according to Max Evans, Utah Pioneer Celebration Coordinating Councils executive secretary. The council has created a list of activities called 97 Ways to Celebrate in 97 in order to spark creative ideas for commemorating the event. The councils mission is to create a grassroots movement among Utahns to organize and carry out sesquicenten-nia- l programs and events. The ideas include sponsoring sesquicentennial exhibits in libraries, government buildings, malls, etc.; organizing productions to tell the history of the local communitys settlement; encouraging use of the sesquicentennial theme For additional information, contact the Utah Pioneer Ses- quicentennial Celebration Coodinating Council, 300 Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, UT 84101-118- Published in the Sun Advocate September Carbon County will temporarily restrict passage on Airport Road on Saturday, September 7, 1996 from 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. due to safety factors involved in the Child Abuse Prevention Benefit Air Show.
