Show A SHAM SEUM UNDER the above heading beading the new york world publishes the following letter from a native of sweden who was wai on arriving in this land ot of liberty not only to be robbed of his bis money but to be deprived of his freedom on account of his loss As an illustration of the work workings iop of a system which sets a criminal free on bail while it imprisons his bis victims victim we commend the story to the consideration of the lawyers jad and legislators of the united states to the editor of the world I 1 am a native of sweden and arrived in this country in november last landing at castle garden clarden I 1 am informed by some of my fellow countrymen here that the world Is ia the leading newspaper in toe the united states and that it is ever ready to extend its powerful influence towards securing justice for the oppressed I 1 am therefore impelled as a last resort to appeal to you having exhausted all other means of trying to obtain redress and to lay before you facts which make out a case of such shameful injustice as to merit more than passing notice perhaps 1 in I helping me you may also be a assisting is ting other unfortunates who like me have been the victims of cruel wrong upon my arrival here I 1 had bad with me a sum of money noney amounting to over 2000 crowns swedish money which was in a leather wallet in an inside pocket of my vest this constituted my whole available means with which to begin life on my new home upon stepping ashore at castle garden I 1 was lap approached roa clied by an agent or runner ar WE who took me to the emigrant boarding houdeno hou seNo 3 8 battery place where a few moments after my entrance I 1 was drugged and robbed ot of my wallet containing all my money by this runner who was assisted by others in the place the robbery was reported to the police and in a short while the thief was captured ile he was placed in a row with other men and I 1 was asked to rick ick him out ont which I 1 readily did was congratulating myself upon being in a country where justlee justice is done impartially to all when judge of my surprise on the following day I 1 was myself arrested and placed in custody I 1 nad had committed no crime and was wad at a loss to know why I 1 was subjected to such an outrage I 1 was accart accustomed omed to consider myself an honest man and therefore felt my disgrace keenly for fenlong ten long and weary weeks I 1 was kept in custody deprived of my liberty to one brought up as I 1 was to breathe the 1 pure air of heaven amid the mountains of my native land this imprisonment was torture unspeakable I 1 am uns unable ble to converse in i n the english language and there was no one oae who c tell me why 1 I was arrested ip I 1 w was uld s a perfect stringer stranger here and haa had not a friend to whom I 1 could apply for information or assistance day after dak day dragged wearily along and I 1 had bad not nothing ing to do but brood over my wrongs to conjecture reasons for my arrest and to speculate as to whet heip I 1 should ever see the bright san sunlight light again I 1 began to wonder whether at ter all I 1 had really landed in america which in my country we are led to believe is tho the land of freedous free doid doul and the home of liberty had I 1 not by some strange mischance been set ashore in the home of the was wad that real really lythe the statue of liberty which I 1 still seem to see as it looked that night before our landing illumining illum ining the whole harbor and seeming to extend an hospitable welcome to the strangers now approaching within its shadow for the first time these and other thoughts and conjectures crowded last upon me as I 1 lay in my dungeon everything however has an so did my imprisonment one day I 1 was suddenly set at liberty As soon as I 1 had recovered somewhat from the effects of my confinement I 1 made inquiries as to the cause of my arr estand was struck dumb with amaze amazement Luent when informed that I 1 had not been arrested all could this be true were those ten weeks of horrible suffering some hideous nightmare or a mere insane delusion NO I 1 was told you were not arrested or imprisoned you were simply confined in the house of detention I 1 am compelled to adek my inability to appreciate the force of the distinction I 1 also learned of other facts as amazing to me during nearly the whole time that I 1 was imprisoned the thief who robbed me was eto n his liberty think of it t the he criminal rim sil free the innocent victim in a noisome dungeon dun geoa such a th thing ifie would not be tolerated in my country no not even in despotic russia the criminal was set free shortly after his bis arrest he gave bail in the sum of 1500 two bondsmen qualifying the case has never been tried r tale thief has left for parts unknown the two bondsmen accepted by the authorities are insolvent and entirely worthless so I 1 am informed in the district attorneys office nothing can be done f for 0 r you was tile the only I 1 cou could ld get I 1 am now left penniless my prospects have been entirely blighted by in my 1 imprisonment al although it we was all 11 1 I had I 1 could have stood the loss of the m money on but the loss of my liberty has entire entirely et and wholly deprived me of ct certain chances involving ng my future prosperity for which I 1 came to this country I 1 trust you will ventilate this matter and so prevent like injustice being tone done to others I 1 have had bad this to you translated and have subscribed my name and address thereto JOHN no
