V-- ' v jf 5 grounds group of 105 volunteers donated 343 hours to clean the grounds at Mont Hannon Junior High last week. It was the first project organized by the Volunteer Center, a community and college organization created to coordinate volunteer projects. A V l4 Vh ? :' r i ,i Geri Petersen, who spearheaded the project, was aware the grounds at the junior high were in need of work and that custodians were overworked and had little time to devote to grounds work. She and other workers sent out a call for vol- unteers and had students from Mont Harmon, College of Eastern Utah, the youth center, Westridge Middle School and Durrant Elementary respond. College students acted as group leaders directing the younger students in an organized work effort. When the work was done, the volunteers were treated to a barbecue at the college, prepared by Hal Wilcox. The Volunteer Center is receiving funding from U S West and the department of higher education. Bill Dye, forester on the Ferron Ranger District, reports that many of the middle and high elevation roads are closed to vehicle traffic. Snow still blocks many of these roads. Joes Valley Campground and the boat ramp camping areas will be open for the Memorial Day weekend. Water in the reservoir is rising, and it is anticipated the boat ramp will be be usable by Memorial Day. The road to Wrigley Reservoir is open, and the reservoir is open for fishing. Other reservoirs such as Willow Lake, Duck Fork, Grassy Lake, Petes Hole and Potters Pond are still closed due to snow pack on access roads. It is doubtful these roads will be open by Memorial Day. Those using forest roads are . Higher than normal runoff in many Utah streams this spring may erode stream banks and require bank protection work or other work. Landowners and others planning work in streams are reminded that permits for the work may be required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or the Utah state engineer. Both agencies have emergency permitting procedures to expedite the permit process. Anyone planning to work in Utahs streams or rivers activities, according to Dye. Fees are charged for campgrounds per night, per site this year at Joes Valley, Joes Valley boat ramp, Indian Creek and Ferron Reservoir campgrounds, Forks of Huntington, Old Folks Flat, Flat Canyon and Gooseberry. Forest users are encouraged not to travel on these roads or attempt to go through or around snow drifts. This action results in road euid resource damage which exists for a long time. The public should remember that all vehicle travel, including ATVs, are restricted to forest system roads and trails designated for that use. The public can pickup a travel map at any ranger district office which will assist them in planning summer trips and telephone number to make reservations for a limited number of sites in Joes Valley Campground, boat ramp, Flat Canyon and Old Folks Flat campground areas.
