Show 4 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Thursday, March 4, 1993 News German national arrested for assault By LAYNE MILLER Staff writer A German national is being held in the Carbon County Jail on charges of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault for allegedly attempting to take his baby son from his estranged wife, who is a Wellington native. The incident began March 1 when two Carbon County deputies responded to an assault in progress in Wellington. Officials were told that Guido Sten Ponath, age 27, from Germany, used a stun gun to assault the sister of his estranged wife. Ponath was subsequently arrested and booked in the Carbon County JaiL An investigation into Ponaths background showed he entered Mexico and then traveled through Tijuana and or IRA CD parade grand marshal San Diego enroute to Las Vegas, Nev., where he met his parents before coming to Price. Ponaths wife told officials she took the couples baby son and left Germany because of marital problems. Following his arrest, Ponath was served with a protective order under the spouse abuse act, said Carbon County Sheriff Jim Robertson. Bad was set at $10,000, but U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service officials served Ponath with a detainer pre- venting him from leaving jail. They can do that when someone is in the country illegally, and when they have committed a felony, Robertson said. The case is now in the hands of County Attorney Gene Strate. The incident is being filmed by a freelance videographer who says he is working for a German television station. Officials say the couple met until it became Sheldon Hansen Chevrolet. He then served as the manager of the CEU bookstore from 1973 until 1980, when the Dart family opened KRPX radio.
