Show Tuesday, October 13, 1992 Candidate stresses two parties Haddock is fiscally conser- vative and said her background taught her to save pennies, not just dollars, pennies." She says she is a good manager who has learned to work smarter, not harder. Seeing how to do things comes easily to me, and I like organization, "she said. I am congenial, I totally enjoy people. I have the desire and time to do the job." Carroll Haddock knows her race for the county commission office will be a difficult one, but shes willing to meet the challenge of running as a Republican in Carbon County and being a woman, at that. To her, running for office is an obligation. If everyone had to fill one term in government, we wouldnt have the mess we are in now with people who have made government service into a profession," she said. She doesnt shy away from her party affiliation and says she considers it a matter of integrity to run as a candidate for her party. y She emphasizes that a lends to balance system two-part- government, that Carbon County must take its head out the sand and recognize the need for a system if it is going to progress. For too long, Carbon County has been a place where there has been no choice," she said. There are only a few places left in the world where there is no of two-part- y choice. The fact that she is a is also a Celebrating autumn cated consumer. By ROSANN FILLMORE Sun Advocate editor woman Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 3A strength, Haddock said. We have an obligation to keep women in government. We need the Carbon Countys most Carroll Haddock thinking and reasoning women bring to office. Again, having women in government lends balance to decision making," she explained. Recognizing that people often vote for the person rather than a party in local elections, Haddock emphasizes her strengths. She owned and managed a local business for 10 years. I was not a perfect business person, but I tried and I learned so much, she said. Among those things she learned was to understand the business world, to understand the needs of the consumer, to appreciate peoples needs and to be an edu urgent need is economic development, Haddock said. She believes industry must be recruited that will generate products or services to be sold outside the area and provide a good income for local families. She believes it is important that firms are recruited that use the skills most people in the area have. We must look at these companies and attract those that are right for our area, that have low water needs, that will bring money into the area," she said. Haddock believes in open-doo- r government and wants to encourage more public input in county actions. I cant assume someone is going to think the same way 1 do, she said. They may have seen something I have completely overlooked or have an opinion I need to consider. Harrington runs on conservative platform By ROSANN FILLMORE Sun Advocate editor When Richard Harrington was in town campaigning recently, he told the Sun Advocate he believed few of the Democrats he spoke with here were truly liberal They talk more like conservatives, he said. Harrington is basing his campaign the notion that a conservative like himself more accurately reflects the values of the people in the Third Congressional District. That could be a hard notion to sell in Carbon County, but Harrington likes to say, If on like Owens, youll like Orton. Owens lost the primary election in Carbon County. you His primary concern is the deficit. The U.S. Congress is spending money my hasnt earned yet, he said. I want to preserve the American dream for our children. There are some things he stands for protecting freedoms, Americans taking care of themselves and allowing economic growth to occur. Taxes are high, tax laws incomprehensible, punitive, confiscatory, and are damaging the American family, he duals they will be representing, solely their constituents. Otherwise, votes in Congress can be bought with campaign contributions. I am also very much opposed to government restrictions that will control the use of public lands. Everything we eat, live in, wear and drive comes from the dirt. When the federal government says you cant use the dirt, our society comes to a screeching halt, Harrington said. We are talking about the forfeiture of our natural resources, the resources that make us a wealthy country. The candidate believes the battle for freedom is not a battle of bullets, but a battle to empower political ideology. There is a dramatic difference between liberal and conservative ideology. Conservatives believe in restricting government regulations, in free enterprise and market- - driven economies. You change bureaucracy by changing the philosophy in Washington, he said. Democrats and Republicans look at proverty and feel compassion. Democrats want to solve it by handing a person a welfare check. Republicans look at poverty and see a chance to rehabilitate and give opportunities. They would heal poverty with a job. Citizens have a basic responsibility to take care of last resort, Harrington lie would solve the health rather than have it tied to their employment. Such a A Oct. 29 Special Return 7pm ends Thurs.
