Again, not all of it is caught in the precipitators, or the scrubbers, or even in the catalytic converters. Some stays in the fly as hand comes out the stack and acid rain falls on the hay and gets into the milk and the meat. Pollutant levels increase in the wheat and the com and the chicken eggs. These products don't look any different but the contents are different. Why don't I want a power plant in my back yard? Because there are more important things than any amount of money that might come into tire valley could buy. Yes, I work on power plants and I leav e the valley to go to work but I dont want to come home to a smoke-fillepollution- filled valley and have my children and grandchildren sick because the air is full of small particles of arsenic, lead, sulfur and other poisons - not enough to kill them - just enough to rob them of the most precious thing in life clean air and good health - which all the money in the world cannot buy. d, -- Sincerely, KendellR. We have a great medical institution in our valley, as you are aware. The health care field is a great career for our youth to consider. The scholarship fund from the Gunnison Valley Hospital has been around for many years and has helped many students in our valley. There may be some residents in our valley that are unaware of these scholarships. With tine rising cost of education, I think this is a very worthy way to contribute. Have you thought that through? Just how does that happen? The construction crews that will come in to build the plant will be temporary - and the earnings are being sent home. How many local builders were hired to build As for the crews who work on these plants: Generally there is a lot of illness, with lots of colds and flu. The workers just don't feel their best, starting about two weeks after they are back on a power plant job. Many times a small scratch becomes a big infection at a power plant because the pollutants get in the workers' systems and lowers their resistance levels. As workers we are continually told to wear respirators. It is stressed over and over because the burning of millions of tons of coal produces tons of lead, mercury, arsenic, sulfuric acid and noxious materials. Air people that run the plant and take up permanent residency in the area have been specifically trained and then move into the area. Crews like the ones I work on are sent wherever the jobs are bid. We rent the least expensive housing we can find. Housing is difficult to find and it is temporary. I usually stay in the camper on my pickup.
