Show Page 8 SalinaSun NSHS Drama earns top draw at Region 13 festival Wednesday. April 2. 1997 Spring yard work tips by Clyde Hurst Spring is seriously here and many are busy with spring yard work. A couple of weeks ago i gave indicators for applying delayed dormant sprays to fruit trees. If this work is not done it can still be done on those that are not in bloom. Many apples are at green tip right now, depending on location in the valley. Pruning can still be done if needed. As noted before, flowering shrubs are best pruned after flowering. Recommendations for pruning roses usually indicate that it should not be done too early. This is so we will not prune before the danger of winter injury is past. When roses are pruned we want to take out dead and injured stems along with the general shortening and thinning. If the work were done before serious winter weather were over additional injury could take place thus necessitating additional pruning. Although there will likely be some frosts that will injure tender herbaceous plants, they will likely not be hard enough to injure roses. I have noticed that there has been some borer activity in some roses. The symptom is a hole down the middle of the stem. This sometimes extends for a foot or more. It is important to prune such stems below the hole. In the bottom of the hole there are usually one or more larvae of the borer insect. The stems should be burned or hauled away or otherwise treated so the larvae do not continue their life cycle and the new adults reinfest your roses. Another project for the yard that can be done now is aerating the lawn. The most effective aeration removes plugs or cores of grass and thatch and lifts them to the surface. The remain Willperform April 25, 26 for community ing hole allows the movement of water, air and fertilizer into the root zone which improves root growth and health. If the cores or plugs are left on the lawn surface the soil melts away and filters down into the thatch layer and stimulates microbial activity that aids in the breakdown of organic materials there. When performed regularly aeration reduces and prevents the accumulation of thatch. As we play on and work on and for whatever reasons walk on our lawns (and we should enjoy them), the soil getscompacted. Compacted soils have reduced pore space and consequently poor gas exchange. Water penetration is inhibited and the grass does poorly when growing in such an environment. program of aeration each spring andor fall, depending on soil and lawn condition, will reduce the problems of compacted soils. It is also one of the best things you can do to reduce thatch accumulation. Thatch is most harmful when it accumulates to an inch or more because it restricts the movement of water and fertilizers thus decreasing the vigor of turf grasses. Before aerating, be sure the soil is thoroughly moist to get the best penetration of the hollow tines. It is also a good idea to mow the lawn before aeration. This first mowing of the year ought to be a short one to break up as much dead grass and other leaves as A regular preventative possible. Most of the confusion resulted from hunters not realizing the draw is often completed a few days before results are posted. Before the draw result list can be to posted it must be double-checke- d, ensure the proper number of perm its for each hunt have been allocated and that no other errors have been made, said Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. To do all the double checking and verifying requires that the draw be conducted a few days prior to posting the results, to ensure the posted results are correct," she said.
