Before the evening was over, family members, friends, former play ers and BYU coaches Lav ell Edwards and Norm Chow both teased and honored the giant of a man and coach. Upcresa was honored for his achievement of being named coach of the year in the Western States Football League. One former player said that other than his own father there is not another man in the world he respects as much as Keith Uperesa. The one common denominator mentioned throughout the evening by assistant coaches and friends alike is "The Look" Keith delivers to someone instead of losing his temper. His kids and former players mentioned that when they saw "the look" that they knew Keith was serious, and it was time to pay attention. Keith's wife, Kaipo. teamed up with Claudia Olsen and Paula Brewer to help keep the entire evening a total surprise. After enjoying a dinner, complete with a football field for a cake, the Uperesa family went to the Basketball game in the Activity Center. At halftime of the game. Snow College Bookstore manager Frank Montoya, presented Kaipo with a dozen roses and a dinner for two. He then gave the coach a commemorative photo and an embroidered jacket. Once the evening was over, it was pointed out that the coach had been recognized for doing an outstanding job on the field and w inning a lot of ball games, but the fact that he may have one of the highest graduation rate of football play ers in the country' was not mentioned. This spring, vv hen it's time to don the cap and gown for commencement. 25 of 26 sophomores on the football leant will graduate, or will have already done so. That's a graduation rate not unusual for a Uperesa of team, yet not necessarily known by many who respect him for his talent with teaching young people how to win football games. rd 96.
