Show Page 2 Salina Sun Wednesday. August 28. 1996 Todd's Wheelin' parents may suffer fever All fates iL Back-to-Scho- ol by Todd C. Wheeler The time has finally come. Yes, we have reached the end of another sum- realize many parents will roll their eyes at this because its nothing compared to the trauma they go through for back to school. But, hey Im still new at this back to school stuff. I recently asked Brian Hart of KSVC if he would be willing to swap his teenagers for my two little ones. He laughed and said he wouldnt because he had finally learned to anticipate what his kids were going to do. Now, Im not saying I dont love my kids. I love them almost as much as I love my wife, who I love more than anyone else in the world. However, five years ago when we were married we decided it would be five years before we had any kids. Strange how life turns out sometimes. As I look back on those five years, four of which we had at least one child, those were the years I learned more about myself than at any other time in my life. It has also been the most joyous time of my life. Where would I be without my kids? I dont know, but my world is a lot happier with them. Like most parents I want and I try to make this a better world for my kids. This should be the goal of every parent. I mer and its time to go back to school for many people. For some this means purchasing millions of dollars in clothing for their children, or so it seems. For others it means telling their kids they are out of luck for new clothes because the kids were too lazy to get a job during the summer to earn the money to buy clothes. For those students in this boat, be cheerful there are only 19 days left until Christmas. This year, my wife and I enrolled in preschool. This our 1 four-year-o- ld was nothing new, when we lived in Ogden we had her enrolled in the pre- school at Weber State University. However, this year we got hit with the back to school fever unlike we have ever had before. Suddenly it was go here for a shoe sale, go there for a note book, over to JJ WDs to look at backpacks. It seems the only stop at a store recently that wasnt for back to school was at Barretts for groceries. Even then, you have to look to see if they have a bet- ter buy on facial tissue to send to the school. Those with cause are causing biggest stink Dear Editor, As I read the Petition Signers names on the livestock petition, memories flooded my mind of those - same names who walked through the doors of Bums Saddlery requesting donations for everything from Cemeterys to Beauty Pageants! Tell me, was there a smell to that livestock money? Next came the names of previous livestock owners, how 1 did chuckle. Talk about stink. Try sewing up some of their sweaty blankets, pads and yes, athletic equipment.. Weve all put up with smell in our lives, but the biggest stink in this . . 'it- - r l is those wonderful folks with their cause. You have turned neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend and nearly destroyed the community that I once called home. And to the Lady with the cause, you now have a new one, you can run door to door yelling BOYCOTT, BOYCOTT! That may get me out of here. And 1 promise you I will take the oldest business in Salina Livestock Oriented and my family with me. You may have my horses. Sincerely, Donna Bums Salina ! The Blackhawk board has worked very hard, I am sure, in making those arrangements. However, it is impossible for me, and many others with whom I have spoken, to understand what keeping animals out of proximity to homes would have to do with the failure or success of the Blackhawk Arena. People, some with animals and some without, come to these events from Salina and all over Utah and neighboring states. They patronize the motels, restaurants and other businesses, including stabling their animals commercially. All this is good for local business. All of this should not affect the ordinance which, as it stands, gives all residents the right to enjoy their homes and yards without the unpleasant odors of corrals and equally unpleasant dust, flies and rodents. Many citizens of Salina are at a complete loss to understand what obeying this city ordinance has to do with the failure or success of the Blackhawk Arena. Will someone please explain to us the rationale behind that kind of thinkThis is an excerpt from a letter dated August 5, 1996, from the management of Producers Livestock Marketing, Salina Auction: During the past year we sold over 70,000 head of livestock through the Salina Auction.... We can state with accuracy that very few of these livestock came from within the city limits of Salina, certainly fewer than 100 head. We trust city officials will protect the ordinances which allow businesses to prosper...Most of our patrons who live in Salina keep their livestock out- Hes got a R i N6 1974-198- ing? Id like to commend Rocky Williams for having back bone enough to try and end this bitter conflict that's been going on in Salina, (Thanks Rocky!) Ive heard a few people say that was our last best chance to get this matter settled. I personally dont think so, especially now that a lot of citizens of Salina have found that they were lied to. Very few people even got to read the petition that went around town. Well, part of town. It never got to me. Id be the first to admit that animals draw a few flies, all animals so, including people. So I don't think Salina will ever be able to clean up enough to satisfy these people. There's too much time on their hands. ' Id like to ask some of those who are against livestock a question, Does horse pooh poison the ground water?" That might be something you haven't thought of. Give it some thought. wanted was Reggie out of Theres been a lot of friends lost court The over has this conflict, but when someone Sunnybrook. already made the decision there.
