Show Old time Salina Cindy ffndreqion - Old time Salina cowboy. Earl vv. Bascom. was recently presented al Champion trophy buckle for rodeo honors he won 65 years ago. Earl worked for the J.A. Scorup's Lost Creek Ranch of Salina during the 1930's. Back in 1930. Earl Bascom entered a rodeo at the 3 Bar Ranch near the Canadian prairie town of White Bear. Saskatchewan. It was Earl's lucky day as he won second in the bareback riding event, second in the steer riding event and grabbed the Championship title - the very' first of his rodeo career - before heading for the next rodeo. Living on the road and leaving no forwarding address. Earl never ed his Champion buckle. The undilivered award remained forgotten until just recently. Jim Davis, present owner of the 3 Bar Ranch and grandson of Frank Davis who produced the 3 Bar Ranch rodeo in 930. tracked down the now 89 year old cowboy Earl Bascom at his clifomia ranch and presented the long awaited trophy buckle - some 65 years late. All-Arou- nd Bascom, worlds oldest living rodeo clown All-Arou- Organizers of the recent Rodeo Clown Reunion held in Colorado Springs, Colorado have recognized former Salina cowboy. 89 year old Earl W. Bascom. as the world's oldest living rodeo clown and bull fighter. Now living in California, Bascom worked for the Scorup Ranch of Salina. He started his rodeo clowning in 193 1. He continued clowning and bull fighting from time to time until the late 1930's while traveling the rodeo circuit. With this recent recognition of being the oldest known rodeo clown and bull fighter. Earl Bascom w as given a commemorative belt buckle. Tersa Edwards Sister Edwards to serve in St. Louis Sister Tresa Edwards, daughter of Leslie and Carrie Edwards, has been called to sen e in the St. Louis. Missouri Mission. Sister Edwards is the granddaughter of Rex and LaPrell Olsen and Don and Ila Edwards. She will enter the MTC on Wednesday. August 30. 1995. Happy Birthday to Leah Bird August 28. Kurtly Bertelson September 1 and Melissa Neal September 4. Axtell's sacrament speakers on Sunday were Logan Cowley. Brett Heath and Elder Aaron Donaldson, a return missionary. Elder Donaldson served his mission in Fukuoka. Ja- Thursday night. Steven Heath entered his muffins in the cooking class at the Sanpete County Fair and won a blue ribbon. Steven gets to go to the State Fair. Kaye Despain enjoyed spending sometime at the Sanpete County Fair. Eight of her grandchildren participated in the fair show ing their lambs. Also participating in the Sanpete County Fair was Heidi Beck, who took 4th place and her sister. Amy Beck who took 5th place. They are the daughters of Lorie and Dav id Beck from Centerfield. Utah. Dav id and Lorie have an exchange student from Denmark staying with them. Everyone would like to welcome Nicola Tolstrup to the valley. Saturday. August 26. Marais and Kay e Despain attended Marie Ellison and Scott Garrett's wedding at the Manti Temple. Marie is Marais's pan. Chris Sanders started school August 23 and is attending Utah Valley State College in Provo, Utah. Doug and Joan Gillies went to the Veterinaries and Brand Inspectors training Meetings in Provo August 25 and 26. While the men were in meetings, the others went to the Peppermint Candy Place, the Doll MuInternational. seum and the Nu-Skfor and then later dinner met They the Club. some went to Comedy in Stella Jensen had a wonderful birthday, August 22. Stella had her family. Relief Society sisters and many of her friends come over and phone calls to share her special day. Stacy and Tom Stafford and sons. Ben and Kenny, came down for the weekend to visit with Ken and Judy Buckland and celebrated Tom's birthday with them. Connie Buckland came down on Friday to spend the weekend with Ethel Shepard and visited with the Bucklands on Saturday. Connie went home on Sunday. At the Sanpete County Fair. Jessie Brow n won Grand Champion Lamb. Craig Brow n won Reserve Champion Lamb and Doug Brown won Third Champion Lamb. Jessie. Doug and Craig Brown also entered their pigs in Sanpete County Fair and took 4th. 5th and 6th place. Emily and Rhonda Mecham showed their lambs in the Sanpete County Fair. Emily, in the star class, received two blue ribbons. Kristi Despain show ed her 2 lambs and got blue ribbons. Jessica Despain won showmanship in 8 and under. Nannette Despain's sister. Kerry Carpenter, and her children were up from California visiting and spent the week and enjoyed the Sanpete County Fair with them. Ronni. Cliff and Whitt Sorenson also received blue ribbons for showing their lambs in the Sanpete County Fair. Tammie and Kevin Crane and children came down from Salt Lake City, Utah on Sunday and spent the day with Dennis and Kathy Patterson. Tammie is Dennis and Kathys daughter. Trudy and Mick Despain and children and Ethel Shepard visited and had dinner with Dennis and Kathv on Sunday. and & Youre A Player... Public meeting in Beaver on 1996 sport fishing rules A public meeting is scheduled for 20 September. 1995. at 7 p.m. at the Opera House Civic Center 81 East Center Street Beaver. Utah. Public comments will be accepted by the Regional Wildlife Advisory Council (RWAC committee) for changes in the state fishing proclamation to be set for 1996. Representatives from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will also be present to answer questions and participate in discussions of sport fishing situation in southern Utah. Of particular local concern has been the special fishing regulations that apply to MINERSVILLE RESERVOIR. Rules at Mmersville require fishing with flies and lures only and a trout limit of one fish vv hich must be ov er 20 inches long. Numerous written comments from the public have already been received on this issue. Written comments that already have been sent to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources vv ill be presented to the RWAC committee at the meeting on September 20. Additional time will be set aside at the meeting to specifically discuss fishing rales at Minersv ille Reservoir. Interested citizens are encourage to attend the meeting and prov ide input. Fayette News Dean and Darlene Bartholomew were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Paul and Pam Braithwaite in Salina to celebrate Dean and Darlene's wedding anniversary' of 5 1 years. Deans birthday was Saturday, so they celebrated them together. Last Thursday, the Bartholomew s enjoy ed dinner at Fish Lake with Darlene's brothers Neil and wife Delora Rasmussen Saturday night. They watched their granddaughter, Ann Braithwaite, participate in a volleyball game in Salina. Friday. Bart and Sunnie Brow n attended the vv edding of Jeffamy Curtis and Steven Newton in the Bountiful Temple, and their reception that night in Lehi. Jeffamy is Bart's niece. First Ward reports that the Elder's Quorum held an "Adults' Night Out" on Saturday. August 26th. Yesterday was the first day of school, and it was reported that a collective, although muffled, sigh of relief could be heard from many of the parents in the area. I suspect that many of the students are glad to be back to school, too. putting an end to the boredom many seem to experience, though seldom admit. A reminder to parents of children in the elementary school that Back to School Night will be held on September 7th. For parents of this y ear's third grade students, a portion of the meeting vv ill be dev oted to discussion of the annual Goosebeny trip. This year, the Gooseberry trip is planned for Monday.
