Show Page 9, The Salina Sun, Thursday, October 20, 1994 Educational Workshops have added another teaching tool to North Sevier High many ways of educating students, rather than books. The workshops have been a welcomed teaching tool at toe high school for toe students as well as the teachers. The students and community work together to accomplish many learning skills. Fridays workshop included a Fire training workshop which involved students, an area employer and a 'volunteer group, to recognize Fire Breathing Apparatus. The students had hands on training on operating t r North Sevier High School Students The Salina Fire Department teamed up with Southern Utah Fuel Company and North Sevier High School to educate students in Fire Training. Volunteer Firefighters Ross Willden, Gayden Horne and Gary Nelson worked along with Dave Hales, Fred Veater and Gary Jensen of Southern Utah Fuel Company, to teach the workshop. The firemen demonstrated various equipment including the Jaws of Life, a 2 Exttactional Saw and r , participated in their educational workshops Friday October 14. The workshops only prove that then are K-1- the firehose. They learned what firefighters jobs consist of. The new fire truck, equipped with a deluge line was also on display. The SUFCO smoke generator was used to fill Mrs. Elliotts drama room with a non-tox- ic smoke, to simulate the difficulty faced by having to accomplish tasks in a smoke filled environment North Sevier High School would like to publicly thank the Salina Fire Department and Southern Utah Fuel Company for making this workshop a success. A bicycle workshop Sevier School District celebrates 10th Annual Safe School Week Safety of students and staff is a goal that Sevier School District works toward continually by planning ahead to make environments safer. : Americas 10th Annual Safe Schools Week is October 16-2- 2 and is a good reminder to students and employees to think about safety, according to Samuel D. Ware, risk manager and business administrator of Sevier School District. "Every employee of Sevier School District shares the responsibility of risk management. Carefiil preparation and thoughtful actions are the keys to reduce accidents, said Ware. PTA officers, and state department of transportation and law enforcement personnel meet three times annually to review safety items and to take steps to eliminate potential hazards. Diana Wetherell and Judy Parmelee are toe instructors. They are both employedby toe Utah School for Deaf and toe Blind and work in Sevier School District. Wetherell is toe classroom instructor for hearing impaired students, and Parmelee is toe coordinator for elementary level hearing impaired students. The class will be based on toe sign language needs in toe elementary education classroom. Weekly lessons will be presented in sign language and will include handouts illustrating toe signs to learn for that week. Signs are based on toe most commonly used signs as illustrated in textbook. Sign Language for the Family. Each participant must provide one lesson to be presented in sign language, compete assignments and attend all seven classes. At toe end of toe ten and a half hours of class, participants should know about 500 signs and be able to use them. Persons interested in taking toe class should attend toe first one. Pets ranged from lizards, fish, plenty of dogs and cats, to goats, roosters, a calf, and a Shetland pony, all students participating received a ribbon, their moment in the spotlight, and a few snuggles from that special pet. - Trtv Zack Peterson was proud to show his unusual pet, a baby bull calf.
