Upto$10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the responsible parties. The timber sale purchaser and the US Forest Service, in joint cooperation, are making the $10,000 available. An investigation of the Deep Geek timber sale on Thousand Lake Mountain has determined that six inch steel spikes have been driven in trees throughout the sale area. The spikes are located anywhere from 4 to 12 feet from the base of the tree. Many of the spikes have had the heads cut off making them extremely difficult to locate and remove. The Deep Geek timber sale was purchased by the Thousand Lake Lumber Company, owned and operated by Lloyd and Bruce Chappell of Lymon. Lloyd Chappell said, This is a nightmare. Whoever did this is causing us a terrible amount of concern and worry. The spikes must be removed from the trees before they can be sawed to insure that no one is injured. The Forest Service was notifed of the problem in early September, an anonymous caller informed a Loa October is Fire Prevention Month in Salina Continued from page 1 6. Use Electricity safely. If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately and have it repaired. Replace any electrical cord that is cracked or frayed. Dont overload extension cords or run them under rugs. Dont tamper with the fuse box or use fuses of an improper size. 8. Cool a burn. . If someone gets burned, immediately place the wound in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes. If the bum blisters or chars, see a doctor immediately. 9. Stop, Drop, and Roll Everyone should know this rule: If your clothes catch fire, dont run! Stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands to protect your face and lungs, and roll over and over to smother the flames. 10. Crawl low under smoke. Smoke is dangerous! If you encounter smoke, use an alternate escape route. If you must exit through smoke, the cleanest air will be several inches off the floor. Crawl on your hands and knees to the nearest safe exit Watch for further articles from your local Salina Fire Department during this month of Fire Prevention. Ranger District employee that the timber sale area had been spiked and that harvesting of the area should be immediately halted due to the potential for injury. The Chappell family intends to continue with the timber harvest. We feel confident that we can remove the spikes prior to milling. If we stop the harvest, the people responsible for this atrocity win, said Lloyd Chappell The decision to harvest timber in the Deep Geek area was a result of a spruce beetle infestation. This beetle infestation has been assisted by years of severedroughtand extremely dense timber stands. Harvesting of dead, infested, and susceptible trees should prevent further spread of the spruce beetle. Certain trees within the timber sale area will be marked by the Forest Service for harvesting. Because many trees will not be harvested in the sale area, Dave Griffel, a Special Agent and Criminal Investigator for the Intermountain Region, is extremely concerned about the likelihood that many spikes will not be removed from the standing trees. Griffel stated that this leaves the potential, at a future date, fra- someone to be seriously injured or killed from this present spiking incident If one of these spikes injures someone, the guilty person will face a twenty year prison sentence.
