Hard statistics bear out the obvious, 8 of 10 Americans are victims of violent crime, teen homicide is four times higher than in any other country, juvenile arrests are up 50 over the last five years, and 70 of the worlds serial killers live in the United States. Domestic violence is no exception. It has reached epidemic levels in America. Domestic Violence, also called battering and spouse abuse, re' fers to assaultive behavior involving adults who are married, or have an ongoing cohabitiating t i I intimate relationship. In the majority of cases, domestic violence is perpetrated by men against women. Battering is now the leading cause of serious injury to American women, more common than car crashes and muggings combined. Four million incidents of abuse occur each year. The epidemic of domestic violence is taking a terrible toll on our com-- " munities. Directly or indirectly, it affects everybody. The violence in our homes in contributing to the v io- lence in our streets. Its filling emergency rooms and morgues, destroying families and tearing apart communities.
