March 2. 1 994 ' The Significance of Gethsemane by Pastor Mike Bardon, South Sanpete Baptist Church Most people that call themselves Christians believe that Christ died for our sins and rose bodily from the grave three days later victorious over sin and death. However, in saying that, we must qualify dial statement by really defining what is meant by believing that Christ died for our sins. Twist Does this mean that He was a martyr dying for a cause? Was it just to Boy have we got a job for you now! If you dont like it then tough! show the love of God towards sinful men? Was it to suffer the pain of all the whole state get to be involved, so don't go whipping around and think men, that all men might repent and work to be saved? Ha, Ha, Gunnison has a jump on those guys, None of these reasons give the main reason that Jesus died according to w have been doing this for the past eight yean. That long you say? Yes, and the bible. That is simply, that Christ died for our sins (I Corinthian 15:3). it still needs more. You think not?, your wrong if you think that way. Just that simply means that Christ who was innocent and sinless died as a substilook around your own yard, if it looks good enough just for you then maybe tute to take the full punishment and pay the complete price of the penalty of you ought to clean it up a little more. the judgement of God for all our sins. The Greek word translated for in This could be fun and be an adventure in getting to know the neighbor the phrase, Christ died for our sins, means in behalf of, or in the stead and if they need help with their project We should have name for our cam- of There are many people who say they believe in the atonement and say the believe Christ died for our sins, but who dont really believe He actually suffered the complete penalty and paid the complete price for diem all. And unless you really believe that Christ did that for you personally and trust in His work alone for your complete salvation and eternal life, you are still lost and under Gods condemnation, whether a church member of not Ho w then does Christs suffering and anguish in die Garden of Gethsemane fit into all of this? Was his suffering for our sins only on the cross or was some of it in the Garden, also? If some of His Suffering for our sins was in the Garden, did He suffer more in the Garden or more on the Cross'! W'e dont need to speculate about any of this, the Bible plainly tells us the answers to these questions. The suffering of Christ in the Garden was His human reaction to the ordeal that He knew awaited Him on the Cross. His human spirit shrank in horror at this knowledge. He agonized in pray to the Father about it. His sweat was as it were great drops of blood. If there was any other way to redeem men other than the Cross, then let it be. The cup was not the anticipation of His physical death, but what the death would include, suffering the punishment of all the sins of all men. As the innocent Lamb of God who had never committed on e singles in, the anticipation of the judgement of God on Him for all sins was a terrible thing. But the Bible makes it clear, that even though He suffered terribly in the Garden, it is not to be compared with His suffering on the Cross. It was not His blood shed in die Garden but His blood shed on the cross which made an atonement for sin. I Peter 2:24 says, Who his own self bare our sins in his own body ont he tree... Notice Peter says it was on the tree for cross) and not int he Garden that He bore our sins, colossiaas 1:20 show that He made peace and reconciliation between sinful men and a Holy ucni iy the "blood of his cross'' not the blood sweated in the Garden. In Isaiah 53, the prophet of God makes it clear that the lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all in the context of His being cut off in death, not before that in the Garden. In summary the, it can truly be said that all that Christ suffered in life culminating in His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, did prepare Him, qualify Him and prove Him to be an acceptable sacrifice for all our sins. But none of His suffering in life or in the Garden had anything to do with paying the penalty and price for any of our sins. It was only on the Cross that he suffered and died for all our sins. His death on the Cross and resurrection does you no good unless you humble yourself, acknowledging your own sinfulness to God and inability to help save your self or gain any part of eternal life by any works you can do and instead trust only in Christ and His shed blood on Calvary to take away all your sins and save your completely.
