WALL-PAPELeaching in place at Ohio Copper One of the most unique mining operations in the world is that of the Ohio Copper Company of Utah at Binham, where it is winning copper from a disseminated ore body. Years ago the company mined its copper ores ia the usual manner, driving tunnels and drifts through the underground. This was expensive and could only be done during high market prices for the metal, owing to the low grade character of the product mined. In addition to the product mined, there was a vast amount of low grade copper ore in the porphyry on which the property Is located. The proprety was not adaptable to the open-cu- t methods, so a process of leaching was adopted, using the old workings to collect the copper In solution. In the process, water is sprinkled on the surface and collected in tunnels deep down in the deposit. After A Guarantee Of Good Reading SAME HE11ER, 1 1 the water has percolated through the ora masses, picking up certain amounts of the copper in the ground, it is diverted to tanks in the tunnels. These tanks contain tin, which again attracts the copper from the water and eventually turns the tin to copper. The water is then pumped back to the surface to rework the ore again. Precipitating copper from water which percolates through copper deposits is a common practice, but Ohio Copper is the only place where it Is known to be mined in such a manner. The precipitation of copper Is said to have been discovered by a miner living near a stream which originated in the hills of a copper deposit. Tin cans that he disposed of in the stream soon turned to copper and to his amazement he had discovered a process which has for years played an Important part in the production of the red metal. This bore which cuts under the western range ot the Oquirrh mountains is being driven in an effort to reclaim thousands ot tons of low grade ore that lies under water in the Bingham district, and to prospect a vast expense of undeveloped territory. The work is being conducted by the National Tunnel & Mines company, a consolidation of the old Utah Apex Mining company and the Utah Delaware Mining company, and is a subsidiary of the International Smelting & Refining company. , The tunnel was started in June, 1938, and at the current rate of progress, R should be completed and ready for use by midyear 1941. When completed it will connect with the Rood shaft of the Utah Apex unit at a depth of 2500 feet, about 1200 feet below the old water table. Driving of the tunnel is not only being welcomed by people of Tooele as a mining project, but as an agri m cultural project as well. The flow of water developed In the tunnel stimu Is furnishing a lands oj lant to the semi-ariTooele valley, where agricultur.u much-neede- d d production has languished during the past quarter of a century. The tunnel will extend 4Ya miles and Is expected to reduce the cost of mining a ton of ore by about $1.40 so that a lower grade Product heretofore valueless can mined. The ore below the water was considered virtually valueless to because It was too expensive ore the hoist and water the pump and waste to the surface. The tunnel outlet will have cost appro'-mately $1,500,000 when completed.
