Show South Cache Courier, Hyrum, Utah, September 3, 1937 Auction Head Gives Secret of irk i Successful Fruit Marketing Charles W. Irrgang, Chairman of American Fruit and Produce Auction Association, Stresses Importance of Consistency in Offering Through Auctions, and Uniformity in Grading and Pack to Assure Best Results to Shippers. . NEW YORK. Ship your fruit and produce to auction in carefully packed, well-made, neatly la- beled packages and ship consistently. By doing so, you will be assured not only of a successful market, but you will establish a regular buying trade for your particular brands. So said Charles Irrgang, chairman of the board of the American Fruit and Produce Auction Association and vice president of the Fruit Auction Sales Co., of Chicago, in a W. before the Idaho in conTraffic Association, Shippers vention at Pocatello, Idaho. Consistency Is Essential. Consistency in grading and pack cf fruit is absolutely essential for successful marketing, and cannot be too greatly stressed, Mr. Irrgang declared. We also urge the necessity of a consistent offering of any given brand through auction. It aids in establishing a regular demand for that particular brand, thereby eliminating a buyers resistance, which is always necessary to overcome when introducing new recent speech brands. Warehouse space for unloading and displaying samples of the fruit or produce, he said, is provided by the ten auction company members of the American Fruit and Produce Auction Association, which are cated in New York City, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis. All of these warehouses are located on property adjacent to railroads equipped with trackage to facilitate the unloading of fruit, he stated. The shipments are unloaded during the night by experienced fruit handlers and impartial samples are displayed by men who have no financial interest in the product. Fruit Must Qualify. The auction company does not guarantee quality or condition. Buyers must determine these factors when inspecting. However, fruit must qualify to those grades and sizes which are stamped on the container. Catalogues with full manifest of the sale are given to each buyer. The auctioneer and buyer work from identical catalogues, except that the buyer has his own inspections noted thereon, together with his ideas of value. The auction sale starts at a set hour each day and bids .accepted by the auctioneer are always with an upward tendency. For all the services performed by the auction company members of our association, the maximum charge to the shipper is 2 per cent of the gross proceeds. Naturally, then, it is to the advantage of our members to obtain as much as they can for the products they sell. Therefore, the interests of the shipper and auction are identical to realize a maximum. lo- ViSX-v-- ,' y-- Turning the Spotlight on the :;y-- .' ' .
