Y. , First Steam Carriage Met With Disapproval The London Times reprints the following from Its issue of August 5, 3S29: A Gurneys steam carriage arrived on Monday, at the Cranford Bridge Inn, from an experimental tour to and from Bath. The success of this trial much exceeds the most sanguine friends of the invention. . . . Mr. Gumey, his brother, Colonel Viney, Captain Dobbin, and assistants started from Cranford bridge about 4 a. m. They proceeded at a most rapid rate to Maidenhead, which they reached, notwithstanding two or three delays, in about an hour and five. minutes a distance of nearly fifteen miles. After this proof of their capability of speed, they traveled more leisurely, until they arrived near Malksham where . . . they attacked by some brutal fellows, Who, imagined they were come to take the bread out of their mouths. To prevent similar occurrences, it was thought advisable to draw the carriage the remainder of the way by horses. Ilavlng exhibited the powers and practicability of the Invention publicly In Bath, the party left early on Monday morning to return. Prudential considerations induced them not to light their fire until they had passed the place of their late annoyance. They then lighted, and amidst the most provoking delays in securing supplies of water, coke, and charcoal, came the last 84 .miles in about 12 hours, thus giving the proof experimental of the capacity of using steam carriages on our ordinary roads. e In other words, the Commissioners are up againt a question, which, sooner or later, will be an important and serious problem involving the expenditure of the peoples taxes, at the rate, as is now proposed, of $37,500 annually for two years, simply to make a tourist and summer road in Logan Canyon, where thousands of dollars have already been expended. The County Commissioners are wise, in listening to the representations made by representatives from other parts of the county outside of Logan ; when men like E. N. Larsen, of Hyrum; John A. Leishman, of Wellsville; William T. James, of Paradise; E. E. Hendricks of Lewiston, representing the Farm Bureau organizations of their respective districts; and Dr. Chauncy Baird of the Hyrum Lions Club, and P. B. Van Orden, ef the Lewiston, Lions Club, and several others when men like these, urged delay yes, and protested against such lavish expenditures for this one purpose, it means that the people outside of Logan, and many in Logan, do not approve of a proposition of this kind, where they ca n see no direct returns to their sections of the county, where better roads are needed for the transportation of their crops, and for bringing their children safely and conveniently to the various schools. Calls are made constantly upon the Connty Commissioners for the improvement and extension of roads in more remote portions of the county, and they fully realize the justice in demands made, but are forced to retrench and only half meet that which is really needed because of the lack of funds. It took a long and strong line of argument, and much earnest consideration to raise $20,000 for the completion of a school building which has been a crying need for several years in Smithfield, and yet, pro moters of the Logan Canyon proposition are urging the expenditure of $75,000 in two years for what? To gratify a minority of the tax. payers, who seem to see nothing in Cache County unless it centers in Project. -- Logan. , m in ON H L. 0.
