A Fraternal Liaison committee, consisting of the fraternal, social, welfare and civic organizations of the city and state, is being organized, to assist in preparations for, and take an active part in the program of the fourth annual national con- vention of the Disabled American Veterans of the World War, to be held in Salt Lake City, June 23 to 28. Gaylen S. Young, chairman of the general convention committee, has announced that more than three hundred clubs, societies and lodges, are expected to offer the cooperation of their officers and members, in arrangements for the coming conclave, and the details of its elaborate program. Reduced to fundamentals, it may be stated thus : A is provided with a telephone. B is provided with a telephone. C, through wires and mechanism, connects these two telephones. Satisfaction with the service depends largely on A and B. From the very beginning, their is imperative. A must call B and B must answer. Doing these things in the way which makes for good service involves : 1 Such care in asking for the number as one would use in addressing a letter. 2 Such promptness in answering the call as one would give to keeping a personal ap-- pointment. 3 Such courtesy as one would show in making or receiving a business or social call. 4 Such clear, correct speech as one would use in the transaction of the most important business. Each subscriber can increase the effectiveness of his telephone communication by such thoughtfulness as he would employ in his daily life. The answer is plain; most people who have studied the question see it, and many acknowledge it. But it is not much talked about, because forsooth, the politician dreads to say anything which may be construed as advocating more taxes, spending more money. Had the politician of twenty years ago advised farmers to spend five hundred or a thousand dollars for a new team to save time, he would have been x defeated for office! But the answer must be made, and we, as a people, must see it, approve it, pay for it. The answer is wider roads; roads with high and low speed divisions; roads which can carry modern traffic! Not all roads, of course. But the main roads, the well traveled roads, the intercity roads, the roads connecting State with State and county with county these, either now or later, must be made wide enough to carry the present and the future traffic safely, assure the pedestrian of his life and whole limbs, the motorist of freedom from accident, and traffic, the possibility of making time without danger to anyone. When the automobile was new, people cried out against hard surface highway appropriations as elass legislation for speeders. Now the people know that hard surface highways are for them, first, for the "speedersr afterwards. But we all want to make time, save time go fast enough to get the benefit of our cars. Let us stop crying out against the added expense of the wide highway, which alone make motor transport safe for us all.
