After South Cache Courier Keep Peace With Vour Neighbor 'Many quarrel have been started between two neighbors by a flock of nervous flighty chickens in one yard and an attempt at gardening in the other with a poor or even a good fence between. After a hen has developed the habit of flying and finds so many delicacies in the neighbors yard, of which she is deprived at home, it is almost impossible to keep her where she belongs. The larger breeds of fowls are usually easy . to confine because of their sluggish or lazy disposition, but they sometimes develop into good flyers under poor treatment. The small nervous active breeds usually develop the habit of flying and are then good fliers and hard to confine. But these, even the Leghorns of which we hear so much can be kept at home by good feeding and proper training. The time to begin this training is when they and other animals learn most readily. When the young pullets first begin to fly about the yard or up on boxes, barrels etc., befoie they have learned to fly over the fence, the flight feathers of one wing should be clipped with a pair of scissors. This will be when they are about six or eight week3 old. Do hot clip feathers so close that they will bleed or other troubles may develop. Feed them well and especially see that they have a fresh supply of green feed daily and clean fresh water or milk always available. When near the pullets move about quietly and frighten themas little as possible. Keep the fences in good repair and see that there are no holes. When the pullets are about 12 to 14 weeks old or after the blooming molt they have a new coat of fea thers and it will be necessary to clip the flight feathers of the same These feathers will wing againnot grow out again for about a year arid by that time their habits of life are pretty well fixed. They grow and develop with the idea that they cannot fly and they do not try when their wings grow out again, It will not be necessary to crop them again, as long as they are not moved from place to place. The writer has a flock of one, two and three year old leghorns in a small run with a solid board fence only five feet high and has never seen one. of these hens on top of the fence oi over in the neighbors garden. There is but one brood a year. It has been found that these eggs may be prevented from hatching by a spray of miscible oil just as the buds are bursting. From data now being compiled on tests carried on by the Experiment Station this spring it is evident that a spray applied after the tips of the buds show green is better than one applied before they begin to open. It is also apparent that thoro spraying, covering all small limbs on all sides, is essential for success, It would also seem that spraying may best be done from the ground with a spray gun at a high pressure. Where trees have been well covered, good control has usually been obtained with most of the commercial miscible oils, such as Dormoil,' nt-soluble oil. Target etc. Brand, In cases of very servere infestation a poison spray of double strength arsenate of lead (8 to 10 pounds of powder per 100 gallons of water) applied when the buds show pink is a good supplementary measure. This poison spray will also help if combined with calyx spray for codling moth. However, a poison spray of this kind should not be depended on alone, as many of the worms work into the buds vand roll the leaves so that they feed on unsprayed foliage and thus do not get the pnson. Dorma- Scale-proo- f, Railroad Earnings Are Not Guaranteed from toe factory A common impression exists that railroad earnings are irksome way guaranteed by the Government. This is not the fact. The railroads were paid for the Federal Control period a fixed rental and were given an option for continuance of this basis for six months thereafter. This arrangement expired August 31, 1920, since which lime nothing even resembling a guarantee has been in effect. Under the Constitution a railroad has always been entitled to earn a fair return upon its property devoted to the public use, the percentage which constituted such fair return being a question for determination by the courts. Since then it has been reduced by the Commission to 5.75 per cent. In no year however, have the railroads secured the fair return contemplated bj the Act, as the following will show: The lecturer declared that we could learn something from all peoples. The price of transportation can only be reduced as the cost of transportation is reduced and the railroads cost of living has increased in like proportion to that of the individual. Every effort, however, is being made to reduce it. . Constructive suggestions are always welome. 1" C. R.
