ENSIGN Explaining The Electric Meter the upper part of the face oj the electric meter, of the size and capacity usually connected for residence lighting, are four dials, each numbered 1 to 0, or 10, This meter records the amount of On electricity passing through it in kilowatt hours. Each division of the dial at the right-han- d represents 1 kilowatt hour, and in reading the meter only that figure over which the dial hand has passed is read. dial Starting with the right-hanhand, read the figures from right to left, and write the figures in the same order, being sure to take only those which the has passed. If in doubt whether a dial hand has passed a figure, remember that no dial hand has completed a division until the dial hand to the Right has completed a revolution from 0 to 0. A complete revolution of one dial hand indicates one division on the next dial to the left. The dial hands of adjacent dials revolve in opposite directions. dial-han- d Learn to Read Your Meter. deducting the reading at any one time from the latest reading you By will obtain the amount, in kilowatt hours, of electric energy that you have consumed between the two readings, and this, multiplied by the rate in cents per kilowatt hour will be the amount of your bill for that period. For the average residence lighting service the two dials on the right-hanside of the meter are chiefly considered for computing the monthly consumption, although all the dial hands are constantly changing their positions when the meter is in use, that is, when lights are turned on, or the electric iron, the washing machine, etc. is being used, and the meter reader on his regular inspectien takes the readings of all dials for record. A Record Card is carried for each consumer, and the meter reading for any one month is entered on this card opposite to that month and ate, and your monthly bill is made from this card. d the meter, so that the reading of one month may be greater than usual, but. this does notact permanently against the consumer, as, the reading taken at one time being high, and incorrect, the correct reading of the following month will rectify the error. The active parts of the electric watt-hou- r meter consist of a small electric motor, the moving element of which is geared to a train of wheels behind the dials. The rotating part of this motor can be seen through the small window under the dials, and the speed of this disk is governed by the of electricity amount flowing through the coils of wire in the meter, and the amount of electricity flowing is governed by the size of lamp, electric iron, etc. that is connected to the house wiring. When any lamp, etc. i3 connected to the service the meter is at once put in motion, and the dial hands are moved forward, faster or slower, according to ths speed of the disk, and in proportion to the number of lamps, etc., that are connected. The amount of electricity consumed can be checked to a reasonable degree of accuraay by the following method: On the revolving disk seen through the smaller window on the meter will be seen, as the disk is revolving, a black spot on the edge of the disk. Starting' when this black spot is passing the open space seen through this small window, count off a certain number of revolutions of the disk, and note the exact time, in seconds, that it takes for these revolutions. We will assume that it takes 61 Beoonds for 4 revolutions of the disk. Multiply the revolutions by .3 (three tenths), and by 3600, the number of seconds in one hour, and divide the result by the time required for the 4 revolutions. 4x.3x360070 watts. 61 t,--- UTAH Store-- ' i v- ) vG:,'4V - v rOir Save As You Go! hour of the lamp, etc., you are using, note the reading of the meter, and after using the lamp, etc., for a known number of hours, again read the meter and get the difference between the two readings, then multiply the lamp watts by the hours in use and compare the kilowatts of the meter with the kilowatts obtained by the watts per hour of the lamp, multiplied by the number of hours in use, If the amounts are the same, the meter is rrect. approximately Save as you go and you will go far; . spend as you go and youll go to the poorhouse.
