Sat Lake City Ten indictments growing out of alleged profiteering In sugar in Utah were brought Saturday morning by the federal grand jury against officials of the Sugar company, two Salt Lake bankers and two Ogden canners. The indictments were returned to United States District Judge Tillman D. Johnson after the inquisitors had been in session for nine days, considering evidence gathered in the sugar cases under the direction of Floyd T. Jackson, special investigator for the department of justice. The first indictment charges that the company, as a corporation, sold sugar which cost $9,444 per hundred-pounbag to manufacture for $23.48. Ten counts are enumerated in the indictment, each charging that the company made a specific sale of the sugar at the price named to a number of Salt Lake and Utah sugar jobbers. In the second indictment the eight directors of the company who were present at the April meeting which authorized the increase in price from the $13 basis are charged with having aided and abetted the company in selling sugar at an exorbitant price. These are C. W. Nibley, Merrill Nlbley, Stephen H. Love, W. H. Wattis, W. S. McCornick, James D. Murdoch, David A. Smith and Thomas It. Cutler. There are eleven counts in this Indictment. The men named are the same as those named in the complaint which was profiteering alleging brought by the United States district attorney of Idaho and under which the directors are now under $10,000 bond each to appear for trial before the United States district court of Idaho. The steamer Superior was run down and sunk by the freighter King late Friday night, it has just been learned. Twenty-eigh- t members of the crew and one woman were missing and the four survivors brought here after being picked up from the wreckage had all but abandoned hope for their escape, owing to the short time that elapsed between the collision and an explosion in tthe boiler room which wrecked the stern of the steel ore carrier. Peter Jacobson, a survivor, who was at the wheel when his ship was rammed, declared the King bore down on them after the exchange of the usual signs. The sea was calm and the weather was rather hazy, but he could easily distinguish lights of the King, he declared. Captain Herman Nelson of the King, however, maintained a fog enveloped the vessels. Belief that a number of the missing were killed or severely injured by the explosion, was expressed by Captain Edward Sawyers of the Superior City. The majority of them were in staterooms directly over the boiler room, he said. He attributed the sudden sinking of his vessel to her heavy cargo of iron ore. I sank deep into the icy water, he said, and the shock brought me back to my senses. I thought I would never reach the surface. After swimming five minutes, up from the depths came a steamers hatch cover, upon which I climbed and hung until picked up. I guess God wanted me to live a bit longer, he added, for where that hatch came from I couldnt figure. Despite the statement of Captain Sawyer of the Superior City that the night was clear, Captain Herman Nelson and members,, of the crew of the Willis L. King, declared a heavy fog hung over the lake at the time of the accident. , RUSSIAN ARMIES, ENDANGERED Wireless Calls Tell Need of Ammunition and Supplies. Warsaw. Province House, Once One of the Most Famous Colonial Mansions, Has Surgeon Knew Just Exactly How Been Partially Preserved. Much Talkative Convalescing Pa- There stands today on Bosworth court in Boston lnit a portion of the old Province house, a most interesting relic of Colonial days ; and the rest of the court is lined with modern office buildings. But in 1820 it was considered a very genteel part of town. Oliver Wendell Holmes lived in the old Province house for 18 years. At the farther end of tlie court stands an archway, decorative of design, which was used in the early part of tlie nineteenth century as an entrance to the governors garden, a part of the Province house grounds. This has been carefully preserved, as have the stone steps which lead to the lower level. The Province house was immortalized by Hawthorne in his Twice-TolTales. The historic staircase now is gone, und only a portion of the exterior of the house Is left. It was built in 1697 by Peter Sargent, a wealthy London merchant, and was considered one of the handsomest residences in town. During the days of its popularity tlie governor gave many balls there.
