Show SOUTH CACHE COURIER, HYRUM, UTAH South Cache Courier NO SUCH THING AS A MEAN AMERICAN Published Every Friday at Hyrum Once upon a time there was a rich man who had been to college and he was sitting in his office when one of his classmates came in and told him of the hard luck of another very popular member of the class. His mill had burned, his two children had died of diptheria, he and his wife both had tuberculosis, and they hadnt a cent. The rich man put his head down on his desk and sobbed. The other man said to him, Oh, dont take it as hard as that. It If they can get isnt hopeless. a to sanitarium away they can both be cured. Thats not it, said the rich man, Im crying becanse Im too mean to do it. It is too bad, but there seem to be a lot of Americans who are going to come soon to the day when they will weep because they were too mean to do it." There is a big chance for America now to do the biggest, the most American thing the world has ever seen. America has the tradition of generosity in her dealings with the world. The things we are proud of in American history are the times when we have given a little more, been a little more generous than the next fellow. We are proud that we got out of Cuba as no other country in We the world would have done. are proud that we returned the Boxer Indemnity, and were the only one of the five Great Powers to do Utah. ' J. A. WAHLEN. Publisher. WOMEN AT WORK It is estimated that there are no less than twelve million women gainfully employed in the United States. For fifty years American industry has been .calling for the help of women and women have responded. Even in the South, women have overcome their predjudices, and while the white men of that region have been getting into overalls, the women have tired of being ladies and tens of thousands of them are adding dignity to industrial employment. In Cleveland, Ohio, the street car conductors have made a demand for the dismissal of the women conductors, and this lead has been taken up in other lines of employment, particularly in cases where there is trade antagonism to women. The claim is put forth that patriotic women who entered industry during the war shoyld now patriotic ally return to their kitchens. To this demand the women return sardonic smiles. They insist and have they plenty of supporters to their claim that their services as conductorettes give better satisfaction to the public than is obtained in the employment of men. They didn t care what it cost their neighbors and employees in lives and limbs to have the world unsafe, if only their big Bethlehem Steel dividends on munitions got bigger and bigger, but they, are too mean to give up a tenth of one per cent to save the lives of fifty three thousand young Americans in another great war. There are some men who are too mean to admit that the world can be better run than the way they have been running it. But these mean men, no matter, where they were born, are not Americans. And the real Americans arent going to let anybodys meaness take away the chance for America to give this splendid gift. America is. too generous to keep the Monroe Doctrine of protection of the weaker by the stronger to herself; America is too generous;- - to want democracy for herself and not to want it for all the world.
