| Show PATRIARCH DEATH kaysville Kays ville aug 8 1898 patriarch Christo pherson layton sr died at half past 10 last night he passed peacefully away surrounded byais family and friends A man of unusual ability and sterling character is gone from our midst his roost most prominent characteristic was self reliance and he failed to understand the meaning of the word failure in anything that he aimed to accomplish Christop Christo hereon pherson layton has hag always been recognized throughout the entire rocky bocky mountain region as aa a leader in all matters of progress and advance as his lyond bond he had alaways taken g awat at as his bond he had alays taken great interest Inte resit in building up the country and being endowed with great foresight and good judgment he was a valuable pioneer his frank and manly disposition won him many friends and it can be said of him that during his long life afe he made many friends for the mormons cormons Mor mons among all classes of people and he always did so without stultifying himself elf to merely mention the many interesting incidents of his long and useful career would require a large volume 14 he has always been a staunch and active latter day saint and his lire life has been principally devoted to the building up of the church he was born bom in Bedford shire england Un gland march ath 1821 and he joined the church of jesus christ of latter day saints january Ta nuary 1 1842 he emigrated to nauvoo in 1843 and in 1846 he enlisted in the mormon battalion from which he received his honorable discharge lp at los angeles july 1847 he stayed in california and was ve very ry successful in his financial affairs and ne be went to england in 1850 1860 he returned to america in the fall of 1850 und fend stayed in st louis two years and then came to utah he and A 0 smoot had charge of the first com rany of immigrants which came by the perpetual emigration fund in the year 1852 in 1856 he went to carson valley to help build up the mission there in the fall of 1867 1857 he returned to utah and in 1862 he was appointed bishop of kaysville Kays ville which trust he discharged with fidelity and unusual executive ability for 15 years and when the davis stake was waa organized b he was waa appointed first arst counselor to president william R smith in the year 1882 he was appointed president of the st joseph stake in arizona stud and since that time his whole energy lias bag been devoted to the building up bf that mission he was relieved from the responsibilities of the arizona last lait Jit january nuary on account ot of liis illness the thriving condition and the wonderful improvements made in the different mormon settlements in arizona which were under his charge for about sixteen years speak volumes for him as an aji organizer and amply proves that he was the man for the work he has been sick about 19 months and an operation resulted in the removal of fifteen stones from the bladder from which he had endured much suffering about five weeks ago he underwent rn an operation and received considerable relief but the long sickness at his age over 77 years wasi was more than human nature could stand and he gradually became weaker until the wonderful vitality of even his rugged constitution was ech exhausted and medical science and gentle nursing could do no more than to soothe and comfort his last few days on earth he Is the father of 65 children of whom 51 are living and his numerous descendants are all respected and industrious citizens he was a devoted husband kind father and the friend of humanity WILLIAM ALLEN |
