Show condemnation OF UTAH FRUIT the state board of horticulture hem has issued a proclamation of warnings warning and advice to utah action to in this particular is the result of the following letter received from the state kate horticultural inspector for district no 7 blackfoot Blac koot idaho under date ot e april 2 1898 dear sir I 1 wish to sa something in regard to codling moth or worms in the apple I 1 find nearly all of your apples last year very wormy from most places in utah this year I 1 shall inspect the fealt ft alt shipped inand in cases where they are very wormy comy will be compelled to c condemn as provided by law I 1 do tot not wish to make any hardship but will be compelled to do so if the nuisance to is not abated kindly got get this matter before your people in time to spray ana use all means in their power to destroy the peat under separate I 1 send you copies of the idaho law please note sections 7 and 12 in regard to la ebling boxes and trees with name of grower so that we can tell where to lay the blume blame and in case fruit is in condemned and destroyed we will know where to charge up the same so that it will fall back upon the grower while I 1 wish to make no hardship upon the grower still self protection to 1 the first law of nature and we will the be compelled to protect ourselves and enforce the law yours truly 0 F SMITH inspector seventh district idaho by way of explanation and advice the board issued the following the sections of the idaho law referred to tn in the above letter read aa follows section 7 the inspectors arp are hereby vested with all necess necessary itry authority to te enforce quarantine against and infected fields lots pre orchards hards nurseries trees tree plants shrubs vines buds or scions fruit or any place or article within the state when the se same may be liable to spread contagious to fruit or fruit trees or crops of any adi dand to provide necessary rules and regulations to govern the same section 12 any person exo ers or of shippers having in their possession fruit trees plants cuttings grafts buds seeds pits scions or other transportable horticultural stock infested with any injurious insects or their germs or with any fungus ox 01 other disease injurious to fruit or truit fruit trees or to other trees or plants or who shall sell or offer for sale gift distribution transportation or planting ting or who shall refuse or neglect at ai destroy or disinfect as provided in this oct act or as ordered by the inspector of his district the said fruit or trees plants aunts cuttings pits scions or other ma materi teri alaor alsor who shall refuse or neglect to attach a distinct mark or label as hereinafter provided shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof theire of shall be fined not less than 26 25 nor more than the district of the inspector writing an 6 above covers all points to which utah fruit axe are usually shipped viz pocatello blackfoot montpelier idaho palls falls oxford preston and market lake idaho under the horticultural law of utah the same stringent measures may be adopted and it therefore behooves all growers and shippers of fruit to erad eradicate as an far as possible all worms and diseased specimens from fruit which Is either offered on the local market or boyed boxed for shipment I 1 remember first all wormy apples or pears are liable to be condemned either in the utah market or abroad and in case of such condemnation the freight charge will come back upon the grower second all danger of condemnation may be avoided by compliance with the rules and regulations as prescribed in bulletin no 2 of the state board of horticulture the law will be enforced signed THOMAS JUDD president C H BLOM vice president J A WRIGHT secretary |
