angus M cannon joseph E taylor and charlesw penrose of the stake presidency dendY seven high councilors councillors Counci lors five patriarchs elders ellas elias morris and william C dunbar of the presidency of the high priests quorum eight presidents of seventies and ten home mission aries all the wards wards of the stake were properly represented excepting the third fourth seventh and tenth city wards and forest dale granger and brighton of the county the presiding officers of the stake organizations organisations actions of the relief societies sunday schools young mens menlo youna ladies mutual assouta t ons primary and kindergarten associations responded to the roll call upon th recommendation of their respective Bishops eighteen young men received certificates authorizing their ordination to the office of elder bachs 61 of whom promised to honor and ms nafy his calling as an elder if ord ordained I 1 ed the second fourth ir fifth twe thirteenth fourteenth sixteenth seventeenth eighteenth nineteenth twentieth twenty first twenty sec ond and twenty fifth quorums or elders were represented toy by their apse siding off officers leers the lesser i was re presen ted generally good condition with the various auxiliary organizations established and in good running order the people were generally prosperous though a fein in each ward were i in need of i help the tendency on the part of younger men and women in a few instances to throw their infirm parents and other relatives on the public was condemned and a proper respect for the aged was inculcated the unity of the saints and their faithful observance 6 of the laws of the gospel ware spoken of and highl commended amder angus M cannon referred to the unfortunate tendency on the part of children to neglect their aged parents and predicted severe punishment for all who were guilty of such iniquity elder joseph E taylor commended 4 the labors of the bishops and to some of their difficulties bespeak ing for these officers the united aid Aw sympathy nathy of phd people he upon them the necessity of a high de n gree of wisdom in their labors and especially with reference to recommendations ions to the house of the lord and the support of the poor he thought some of the people could with advantage be more diligent in studying the principles of the gospel and their duties in connection therewith referring to the support of the poor brother taylor urged the tha establishment and sustenance of industries at home this would do much to solve the difficulty before referred to the tendency of modern education to make young people proud and at the same time dependent upon others feeling themselves above manual labor was criticized criticised and the virtues of the early settlers were commended in conclusion elder taylor urged parents to do all in their power to exert a saving influence over their children president george Q cannon addressed the conference speaking chiefly on the need of diligence and vigilance on an the part of officers of the church in guarding the morals of the young and teaching the people to observe the word of wisdom the choir and con congregation of the young people was referred to with pleasure the support of the poor was spoken of as a difficult matter on account of the congregating of that class in the city and the lack of ability or willingness on the part of the people in the payment of fast offerings A number of the people were referred to as unfaithful in the payment of tithing and all were urged to greater diligence in this and all the oth other er laws pertaining to time and eternity the efforts of the relief societies in the various wards in aiding the poor were highly commended faithfulness in hearkening to the counsel of the servants of god was urged upon the peo pie presiding bishop wm B preston referred to the onerous duties of the bishops and commended them tor for their faithfulness he thought financial conditions were improving and that an aa excuse frequently urged for failure to pay fast offerings and tithing was accordingly I 1 disappearing in regard to faithfulness in these matters the speak i er stated that salt lake stake stood I 1 among the foremost referring to the tendency of the poor people to collect in the city where they became a charge on the people he thought a remedy should be found for this unfortunate condition their removal from ta the ie city into the country should rather be encouraged pauperism would grow so BO long as present conditions prevailed at the same time the poor should be carefully looked after no matter where residing bishop frederick kesler reported the condition of the sixteenth ward he had made personal visits visita to all the houses in the ward looking after the condition and welfare of the people and finding them generally in good circumstances spiritually many poor lived in the ward and most of these were faithful all the organizations of the ward were prospering president george Q cannon followed ex his interest in the exercises of the conference and offering suggestions regarding the condition set forth in the reports of the bishops faithfulness in the performance of their duties elder brigham young of the council of the apostles followed he referred with pleasure to the testimony of president woodruff which had not changed or wavered for over sixty years the speaker felt that the life of president woodruff had been preserved for a purpose and that the guid amee of the work of god during the perilous times past and prospective elder young spoke of the similarity of the present age to that of christ in the fact that thal a renewal of gods work on earth occurred in both eras this work and its benefits were open and free to all men who would accept in humility and by faithfulness earn a part in the first resurrection this blessing was the object of the strongest desire of the speaker for himself and all others in conclusion he urged all to continued faithfulness president george Q cannon spoke on the perfection of organization in the church and some of the benefits springing president wilford woodruff spoke briefly on the fact that the latter day saints are alone on the earth in the redemption of their dead and urged the people not to neglect this duty I 1 elder angus M cannon exhorted the
