Weber County treasurer’s request for legislation on the handling of property tax overpayments has raised the ire of a county commissioner who says the treasurer should already be doing the things being written into the bill “I’m outraged” said Commissioner Lowell Peterson Peterson’s anger stems from Treasurer Kennith Dallinga’s enlisting the support of state Sen Winn Richards to Kennith Dallinga His bill provides steps for returning money Lowell Peterson Commission- er says treasurer should be doing his job publican write a bill providing steps to be taken for returning tax overpay- ments to taxpayers A draft of the bill calls for counties to send letters of notifi Dallinga a Democrat said the perception that the treasurer’s office is not trying to return over- said obviously the effort has been to return the money to taxpayers A budget cut several years ago reduced the treasurer’s ability to also a Democrat payments is wrong “We’re not just here sitting on it” he said the competition in standardized testing scores that one professor said should help dispel the school’s old image as “Harrison High” Bruce Handley chairman of the business administration department said recently released scores off two tests given last spring show Weber students ranked second among 39 participating colleges and universities in one test and above the national average in all subject areas in the other test One test on basic marketing administered by the Education Testing Service based in Princeton NJ showed Weber students had the second highest mean and second highest median scores of the schools participating in the test The competition included Loyola University the University of Illinois the University of Massachusetts and Wake Forest University In the other was issued that would have made it illegal a giant backblack hoe made a move on the walnut tree a Riverdale family has been trying to save from a developer's plans for a shopping center “They were going for it" said Mark Carlin 21 son of Elizabeth Carlin who started the crusade by climbing the tree over the weekend to fend off some chain saws “I just heard the backhoe and went out and got up in York man who was arraigned and sentenced in the Davis County Jail rather than in court because he suffers from several infectious diseases has been sent to the Utah State Prison after pleading guilty to burglary and kidnapping charges Jerome Adrian Beggsmith was sentenced Tuesday by 2nd District Judge Rodney Page to serve concurrent terms of to 15 years for kidnapping a Farmington man Aug 31 and zero to Five years on the burglary conviction The arraignment plea and sentencing all came in one brief hearing Tuesday afternoon that was held in the jail because court officials had been warned Beggsmith has a number of severe infectious diseases including some that could be transmitted through contact with his blood Authorities refused to specify the dis1 business analysis finance and found face down in a bath tub failed and the boy was pronounced dead at St Benedict’s Hospital Tuesday evening The victim was Willie Vaughn III An autopsy was to be conduct- ed on the boy today and police are investigating the death listed as an apparent drowning Lt Richard Peterson said this morning According to police the boy’s mother Debra McClure 132 Doxcy 31 of was running water to bathe her son and his sister when the door bell rang about 7:45 pm Peterson said the mother told investigators she went to answer the door and was there about three minutes when her daughter came and said: “Willie is laying face down in the tub” McClure told police she ran to the bathroom and pulled the child from the water but could not revive him She then woke a friend Darryl Jones who was in the house and the man attempt- ed to resuscitate the boy while McClure ran to a neighbor's house to phone for help According to the police report paramedics were on the scene within 10 minutes "Although the investigation is continuing as it always does in cases like this the death appears to have been an accidental drowning” Peterson said “We see a lot of these kinds of things it can happen so
