present presided preside d over by abinadi olsen and N G String bam spent several weeks in making preparations for the entertainment of the visiting saints and friends who were expected and having received information that a large number would be present the wall of one end ol of our cur meeting house was taken out and an addition of some twelve feet was added in ia order to make roam roc m for the accommodation mo dation ot of the people at meeting in this connection special mention should be made of the carrest and unceasing work of the big chief of siupapa tupua who lakes great pride in in being called and he truly is the father ot of the church at this point fiame a native saint at present holding the office of priest t gether with many other saints here are also worthy of commendation for their untiring efforts in preparing for or confert confer nee nce on thursday day evening the ath elder D 3 foster cluff arrived fram fogatia Fg alii with one of our native saints from the vicinity of apia abia early friday ir tr orning elders J W dangerfield and william 1 L arrived from the same place having come overland by another route passing through the village of Lufi lufi where was assembled the rebel party holding a fano or council considering sid si eting the advisability of cle declaring clarit g war against the present king and ha his s subjects the german consul was in session with them and a german manof man of war was in anchor in the harbor to protect his interests the elders reported having baving had bad good treatment on their two days journey among the natives president ed J wood elders christian jensen jr william W winegar and our dative missionary nary reached here about noon the same day and reported having bad a very pleasant jourvey eadels aldeis were all enjoying goad health and were mere than pleased at raving caving the privilege cf enjoying each others society for a short time A good representation of saints were in attendance especially irom from the south side and east end and of the island among our cur many friends from the east cast end were noted mr john bayerlein Bay erlain and wife mile and the purcell family who in times past have axtt adt d many favors to the elders for which we all al feel wry grateful grat elul B bother other john H ard aid wife were also present the value of whose favors extended to the elders cant ot be named in earthly riches lut but surely great will te their reward in the corla to come before conference was opened on OB saturday sn en english testimony meeting was held by the ten elders above mined we assembled about 9 in the morning each elder made a few re remarks me bee bearing riv g a faithful te testimony ny to the truth of the goetti goepel and reported their several branches in a flourishing condition several questions were asked ol 01 all of which were answered to the perfect satisfaction ot of all by brother wood who closed with supplying the elders with some valuable instructions after the usual samoan presentation of food to the visiting saints friends and elders meeting was called about 4 by president wood elder was the first speaker exhorting the saints to an obedience of the gospel and bearing a strong testimony to the truth of the same president wood closed meeting with a few remarks along similar lines meeting was vas again called about in in the evening brother abinadi olsen was the first speaker and used for his subject subie ct repentance brother D foster cluff then sooke on the holy ghost meeting was called about on sunday morning the ath dinst fiame was the first speaker bearing a strong testimony to the truth ot of the work and speaking peaking from acts 22 brother quinney followed speaking on the resurrection and bearing his testimony in a very ery forcible mar marner ner three schools were represented in the sunday school exercises that commenced at 1130 1130 a m Salea aumua seventeen mem members six and siupapa thirty two the three schools recited the articles of faith in concert in a very creditable mariner manner the Salea aumua school then gave an exercise on the priesthood sang an english song and one of their members gave a brief story of the book cf mormon using the book of mormon chart for the purpose the school schod answered a series of questions on the sacrament in concert one of their members nuu giving a an n account of the work that bad C step e p gol done 0 n by that school during the post past six months the siupapa school repeat repeated edithe the ten commandments in concer and sang an english song brothers jensen and wood each made a few remarks reir arks priesthood meeting convened at one and there were present besides the ten missionaries from fram america two white deacons four native deacons one native priest and two native elders one being a missionary missi ary president preside nt wood presided an opportunity was here bete given for all the natives holding the priesthood together with the elders who had not and would not have an opportunity port unity to make remarks during the sessions of conference to express their feelings fifteen of those present each sp spoke ok e for a ft few w mom moments ants and it was a pleasure indeed to note the good spirit and earr earnestness estness ess that prevailed especially among cur native saints brother alfred kenison was ordained to the office of a teacher ly brother quinney faanene to the cafice cf deacon ly by brother cluff and to the office offic e of teacher by brother jensen the last metting meeting of the conference assembled at 73 7 30 0 in the evering brother Dau dangerfield Danger gerfield neld spoke on the atonement brother wood followed with a few words in english to our white and half caste friends present thanking them for their presence and for the kindness they bad extended to the elders in the past he closed the conference with a few timely remarks to both saints and visitors in the meeting at 4 them the authorities of the church and the missionaries sion aries were presented by brother cluff and accepted by the saints the conference exercises came to a close with all the saints benj enjoying i a good spirit and as one of our foreign friends from east end remarked that in the nine mine years our mission has beet been established here we have indeed accomplished wonders for which thanks be to our heavenly father brother wood and party brought a number of prizes to be contested tor for such as ink thread combs matches and and other useful use ul articles to the natives and monday the loth ins dinst was used as aas s aa a holiday when these prizes were contested for and distributed to the winners of various kinds of races such as the abel sack needle orange and others and tho the tug of war swimming races etc and altogether it was a day that reminded ne very much of a good old country fourth of july at ome elder ed J wood presiding elder 0 the samoan mission furnishes tile therol fo 1 lowing statement there have been baptized and 24 children blessed since or from Oct october ath 1896 to april apil ath 1897 the ra mission was never in a more prosper prosperous 0 us caa con and the prospects are et encourage ing for the near future we now have twenty four white hite elders and a number of native elders in in samoa and room for more of
