truth have indeed witnessed and again experienced another time of great rejoicing lor for there is doubtless no record on the pages of C hurch church history in this land of a more excellent lively and enjoyable conference than the one of four days duration concluded here at laie mission headquarters on monday night april ath 1896 under the of elder samuel E wooley the weather was as beautiful throughout the invigorating breezes from oft the placid pacific were incessant and all nature seemed to smile as it were wih expressions of joy and shout with us hosanna to god and the lamb J the various branches of this and the adjacent islands were considering the financial condition of the people and the distance they were required to travel fairly well represented the meetings were filled with attentive listeners the average attendance being and a spirit of love for the work ot or god and a hunger tor for righteousness prevailed and in turn all present feasted not only on the real bread of life but on the hattings tat lat tings of the herd also together with that ancient article known as poi which generally causes the new comer from zion to think within him or herself it no public declaration is made that there is no place like home sweet home the hospitalities of baies residents were generously extended the first day friday ara 3rd was devoted to the mutual Improve improvement men t associations and sunday schools the former presided over by elder thomas brimley occupying the gi vi orning services and the latter under the presidency of elder eider edwin C dibble the afternoon and t the exercises consisted of gospel lectures ampro appropriate questions and decisive answers instructive dialogues recitations essays etc interspersed with songs reports of dranch branch representatives thirteen in number and remarks of explanation and enc encouragement our by the elders all rendered in a credible manner the schools and associations of laie honolulu and kal kanui of oahu bahu and a mixed class comprising members of a number of the different organizations of the island of kanai taking part pam the forenoon of April ath was occupied by the conference of the reli relief ef society sister alice wooley presiding after the usual opening exercises and the reading of the statistical satis financial and labor reports the branch representatives ta tives sixteen in number briefly reported the condition ot of the societies from whence they came the general expressions pres of whom render it possible pos aible to state that woman is doing a good we in this as well as in all other co countries nt the most active and enthusiastic socie however being those whose cal locality will permit of frequent visits to them by the missionary sisters a an elders from zion sister wooley assisted by native S ter ruth kauhini as interpreter tua mad a a lew few encouraging remarks and g ga some valuable instructions t to t the e sister aste iste exhorted them to be faithful an and dili in the good work ot of the relief socie and advised them to live jives ot of murii auriti set good examples and bring their c achl dren up in the ways of the lord the congregation was then edified fat some time with encouraging remarks b 1 some of the missionary and native s sis i interspersed with a few vocal re editions and ana biographical sketches on t the lives of some of the members of the ari R lief society whose chose noble deeds hav hale caused them prominence in the Ci churco burc A little before 2 in the after noon of the same day about chil ella birdno commenced alter after the usual preliminaries by the calling of the rott of both laie and honolulu association each member present responding respond inS promptly with an appropriate bible verse or sentiment A nicely prepared program comp comart rt ing exercises exercises similar to those of ame sunday school and mutual Im improver proY ment association but principally in tw english language was tastefully an and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance the general and island authorities of tw different organizations were arese prese in the respective meetings an and n u un n ath evenings included were devoted principally to excellent adai advice and interesting en encouraging cou raging remarks 6 ola instructive and and important subjects by ne j elders from zion during which time fa connection to the reading of stati statistic sW 1 financial and labor reports by the upwards of twenty native elders re t benting the various branches of this and adjoining bining islands reported the spiritual condition edition of affairs in the districts from thence ence they came and the general hurch church authorities and island officers were unanimously sustained the missionary work there ere however until departing but to labor under no special appointment f the evening services of monday en med ed the conference president wooley delivered deliver livered td the closing address in which B e expressed his gratitude to the al lighty for permitting so many to assem le e in general conference under such cebul favorable circumstances he viewed briefly the good work of the past t term extolling all who bad been engaged therein exhorted all loheed the excellent xcell ellent ent advice that had been im barted farted arted and dwelling at some length ion the duties of those possessing the priesthood estwood est hood finished by evoking heavens est blessings on all in conclusion with great ful hearts we laust add that a spirit of love peace aad union prevailed throughout the conference all the exercises of the organizations were rendered in a commendable manner demonstrating earnest and assiduous assi dious labors on the part of eboth teachers and pupils and the im dessive asive timely remarks imparted by ie e servants of god were effectual in id dening the hearts strengthening faith and increasing the hopes bopes of the ints causing them to feel as they re ned ed to their homes that they had ink at the fountain of life feasted on food and been participants in la a gen eral refe refreshing refreshing shing from the spirit of the lord respecting the present spiritual status of the mission as a whole we feel that notwithstanding we may have occasion i to regret the defection of a few who have made shipwreck of their faith and the spirit of inactivity indifference and now observance of religious duty that is in many instances prevalent we have every reason to be encouraged in the onward progress and general prosperity of the cause of zion in this land baptisms and ii no io children blessed being brief the partial results of the labors for the six months just expired the glorious cause of truth is pro grossing gressing on the right and on the left and the true church of christ is moving steadily onward gaining in prestige and adding to its ranks almost daily proving the truth of the scriptural statement cast thy bread upon the waters for thou find it after many days the which being a source of pleasure gratification fi and encouragement not only to those of us who are here now but perhaps to all who have preceded us as ambassadors of salvation on Hawaii nei the paradise of the pacific we are all fairly well happy and rejoice in bearing the glad tidings of a noble and aust cause and feel that when truth gains
