easy Too easy Sure there might be some lousy shooting here and there and Karl Malone and Thurl Bailey are putting up a lot of shots that don’t go down but somehow — when things get serious — the Jazz manage to grit their teeth and pull it out 0 win over Friday night’s the Indiana Pacers in the Salt free-thro- w 114-10- Palace was no exception This time the Jazz didn't have to resort to the heroics they needed to beat the Chicago Bulls earlier this week but they did get some timely outside shooting another outstanding night by point guard John Stock-to- n and the proverbial overall last-seco- team effort ond consecutive “Ve played really badly” said Pacers’ Coach Dick Versace “It was probably as badly as we’ve played all season” Versace was particularly 4-- was really important to us” Sloan said “We had to be ready to play against them We had pretty good defense in the first quarter” The key to this one may have been the early third quarter Utah was nursing a 6 lead but Jazz guard years the Davis High School football team will have to accept the runner-u- p Football Chamtrophy for the State 4-pionship That’s because on a ccld Friday night in November the Darts ran into a fired-u- p Kearns Cougar squad that came back from a first-ha- lf deficit to stun the Darts 26-1- 4 before a crowd of over 10000 at the University of Utah’s Rice Stadium A For Kearns the state title ended 17 years of football frustration For Davis the loss was just another in a series of e setbacks disappointing “We played a good first half but we lost the momentum in the second half and of all games the state championship game is the one you don’t want to lose the momentum in” said Davis Coach Jim Dickson after the game “Our toughest job right now is to go home and try to convince these kids they had a great year” The state title game defeat brought back memories of other losses for Davis In 1983 the Alta Hawks turned back the Darts 1 7 in the state title game In 1985 Davis held a 0 likely be starting today’s game against Brigham Young University in place of injured Scott Mitchell “If you're going to get thrown into it you might as well get thrown into it with the best of them” Richmond said “To go out and play some tough competition is the way to find out what you're really made of” If that's the case then Richmond is going to find out all caping the Big Sky cellar and at 5 and 6 ISU has no way of gaining a Division playofT bid Without a shot at a championship the playoffs and a winning season the incentives would appear minimal There can’t be much more to this matchup
