Show DISCOURSE ered at the utah stake confer ence provo sunday july irth 1896 by DER FRANCIS M LYMAN I 1 MP op tr ad BY ARTHUR WINTER 3 things are delivered unto me of m my y tt and no man the son but the WK neither the father save the the son will reveal and lie be to whomsoever abbe come unto me all ye that labor and are arc avy faden d and I 1 will give you rest my yoke yo e upon you and learn leam of me A am meek and d lowly in heart and ye shall W rest unto your soul drw my yoke is easy and my burden is is t matthew arthew xi chapter verses 37 27 to 30 ill pray ay that the spirit of the lord may with h us abundantly today I 1 have the reports of the bishops and would have been pleased to have rd d reports from all the bishops and alt the brethren who are shepherds the flock but our time is so brie st we can hear but a little at one time au p irce receive ive and profit babut by bui little time too much wearies and k we become weary it is not profit tous to us to be given more there is a to our capacity to receive as there i limit to our capacity to t endure and it we overdo we suffer I 1 was wah e id this morning when we reword ord of the death of elder m ji cannon of what bruther brother henry smith said yesterday that old be true if placed upon his atone e he died of overwork believe ve that there is no man in this cb who has bias been so overloaded overload eci as wm brother abraham H cat cannon non in 1 everything he has been a model fript but in hi bis overwork his bis excess ot of lion n and labor he be has been cruel to elf it has caused chused me to grieve in 4 sait tot for years for it is nut a matt w that Is of out but short duration he has raced excessively excessive ay iy ever since I 1 knew vit S solar so ar as a abstaining from strong ga tobacco and the use ofin of m at he be altna n a model likewise in attending the worship 01 the lord he was a dl tithe payer paye r possibly no man gk more careful and exact than it dihe lie has been a model in keeping a ory of his lile life and has done more itaf work than any other man 01 01 Ish kagi ag fb in the church he was the foot olo lovable vable in disposition he was consistent and wise in in all things except his overwork and that came t gob goodness and generosity of his nature was such that he be not refuse any good thing that snot po po sible aible tor for him to do in his at father has lost one ot 01 his bis mainstays main stays it has seemed torne to me that almost any man among us could have been better spared for in writing in publishing as in preaching and in all business enterprises in which the church is deeply interested brother cannon has been in the forefront he was the junior apostle how much more natural to have thought that death would come among the older ones and that he would have been among the itie last to haye been taken and how difficult it fultor us under these circumstances to acknowledge the hand of the lord but we must do this we must acknowledge his hand in this providence as in all others we have no reason to grieve tor for brother cannon himself but we grieve for the church we grieve for ourselves it is not hit his loss joss it is ours his family and kindred and the people peaple are the losers for them and us we grieve and sorrow on tins this occasion and our sm sympathy pathy goes coes out especially tor for the i family but god will make up to them and to us he will manage and arrange lor I 1 his lis church and lor for his servants and lor the family of brother cannon these losses loses wiil wid all be made up tu to us nd and we must submit to them and endure them with fortitude with courage and with faith relying upon our heaven ly father for in in him is all strength and power and wisdom we cannot break gods laws with impunity when we do we are sure to uffer suffer A man cannot be righteous enough a man cannot be pure enough to avoid the consequences of broken law for foi when we are promised in any of the words of the lord certain bless tugs ings it if we observe the law it is always alway with the distinct understanding that we abs observe erve the other statutes as ah well it is not enough that a man should ob serve the word of wisdom so lar as strong al drinks rinks tobacco and meats ate are concerned the 1 tie obber observance vande ot of this law bangs ail that god has promised if in ad to that law we will keep the other commandments and require requirements ments there is not one law of goo god that stands alone and that can secure to us waa is tmora embraced ced in the promises unless we also observe the me other requirements li it may not in every be so stated but it is so stated in connection with the word of widd m and it is understood in every other law it is not enough that a man should pay his tithing that alone will nut not save a man are we not told that whosoever ahall keep the whole law and yet in one point he is guilty of all it beems a remarkable statement it is nut necessary in order lor to r a man to be damned th he should commit all the crimes in the catalogue it if a man be a murderer he wilt wili be damned it a man shed innocent blood he will be damned if a man commit adultery if a man be a thief or a liar and repents not he will be damned it is not necessary that he should do all manner ot of wickedness besides one deadly sin will bring damnation but it is not so with virtue one virtue alone will not bring salva tion lion it requires the whole law there has not been one requirement made by V our father in heaven that is not absolutely necessary for the salvation and exaltation of man all are necessary yet it if a man indulge in one dead ly sin and repent not he will be damned though he may have kept all the other y points of the law now that seems a L little liitle singular that a man may be damned for one serious sin not repented of 0 while lor for one magnificent virtue he cannot be saved but it takes a combi nation ot of the virtue no man can be saved without faith no man can possibly be saved who does not believe lp in god the eternal father and in his son jesus christ the savior and redeemer el of the world who is our advocate with the father laboring constantly tor for tho the salvation of mankind man must also alsi believe in the holy ghost the third personage in the godhead further more he must bellevo believe in repentance and if he believe in repentance he will repent and if he repents he swill will reform and will work righteousness without works ot of righteousness it is not possible to save a man without baptism J t for the remission of sin it is not possible to save a mans man it is so ordered by oter A father in heaven that these doctrines doc innee 0 i shall be met and conscientiously mea met 4 by eiery every man that would nave have salvation i and that would come back into imo his presence and have eternal lite it it to is necessary also that he should receive the holy ghost by the laying on bt hands without the reception of td use holy ghost it is not possible tor for man to please god paul said ridout taft t it is impossible imps ible to please go I 1 1 l he i could just as have paid that without baptism it is impossible to him without the holy ghost by the i laying on ot of hands it is impossible to i Q please go i without repentance it is im 42 possible to please him without without a broken bearl and a contrite tite spirit it is not possible to plea please r him tnt e are all necessary ono and it is a most combination that is the reason that few there be who walk in the straight and narrow path that leads to eternal lite life it is the the du do not like the gospel it is the re itson there are so lew few that i have received the truth and have cast at their lots with us in the building up tip of this worn work it is a difficult matter tob to be a saint in very deed especially when it is announced by professed foli followers of the messiah that thai all that is necessary for s 0 salvation is that a man sha shall 11 believe in the lord jesus christ and he has done the balance that deadly doctrine has won the hearts ol of millions pf af people it is the depth the height and the breadth of all folly to make an announce ment of that kind it appeals to the weak weakness ness and indifference of humanity what is required of us is that we should keep his commandments and his com mand ments are reason reasonable able and rational 3 and such as men bouat to delight in f for in connection with the observance of his laws there is the presence of that great boon the holy ghost the spirit of the living god which reveals to man that same knowledge which jesus possesses no man the son but the father neither any man the 1 i father save the son and he to whom the son will reveal him now the world are in doubt in regard father there is a lack of and of a concerning the father for the reason that no man the father but the son and he to whom the son will reveal him the very condition of the world today bears testimony to the truth of this saying it is not difficult for us to comprehend its truth for not mis 0 only is it true that no man knows the father er but the son and he to whomsoever the son reve aleth him but it is just as true that no man knows his own father in the flesh except his father be revealed to him it is thought to be a thing in the earth that if there be a father facher in heaven we should not know something about him and comprehend him in some manner but when we come to think of it who knows his bis own lather or his own mother we know but little of each other the great injunction man know thyself has been baen sounded in in our ears but who knows hemsell him sell who can fathom the depths of his own soul or of his own physical being to say nothing about the spirit it takes the light and inspiration of the holy ghost it takes revelation coming coining by degrees to the soul of man lor for man to become enli enlightened and to comprehend the truth tut but it has to be in the proper channel when men walk in the straight and narrow path when men believe and answering to that belief repent and reform when men are baptized and have their sins tor forgiven given and the ahe light of revelation comes in upon them by degrees these lessed blessed revelations contained in the book of doctrine and covenants begin to unfold themselves to the mind and we see a little of the truth we see the philosophy of the plan ol of salvation and we begin to get a little light in regard to our father who is in heaven in regard to jesus and his mission pis bion and in regard to the mission ot of the prophet joseph smith aed and the work of the lurd lord revealed to him we comprehend these things by degrees but we learn slowly and sometimes we become discouraged because we do not see more readily and because more light does not come in 0 upon a our souls the light however would be greater it would be stronger and much more intense than it is it we were more faithful and more devoted to the duties that devolve upon us it we would only govern ourselves and bring brin ourselves in submission to the mind a and will of the father if we would only learn ivern the lesson of obedience of humility of integrity and have our V conscience always clear we ne should know day by day that we have done the will of god that we have honored him and kept his commandments for when we do thus we know of the doctrine A man cannot do the will of god without knowing the doctrine is true jesus enunciated a most sacred philosophical and vital truth when he said my doctrine is not mine but his that sent me if any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine and further if any man will repent ot of his sins and be baptized tor for the remission of them he be shall receive the holy ghost and when man receives the holy ghost it moves him in that degree that he is prepared for light and revelation now the power ot of the holy spirit is with man just in proportion to his devotion and his labor in building up the kingdom if a man be negligent careless indifferent the spirit of the lord utterly withdraws itself from him it is not a violent departure there is no boisterous demonstration when the spirit of the lord withdraws from a man or from a people As we cannot tell whence it cometh neither can w we tell whither it goeth it is most delic delici ira and sensitive and in order to retain it it is imperatively necessary that we should be cart carefully fully on the guard so that it shall never be grieved by bv our thoughts words or actions but that it shall feel a complacency a quiet and safety in our souls come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I 1 will give you rest ohl oh if our brother abraham could have taken rest and have been relieved of some of the great responsibility and loads that were upon him that thai his lile life could have been preserved to us that is how we feel naturally but now that his earthly career carber is closed we would not it would be vain it we would ask that he should be returned to us for blessed is the man who hath finished his labor though he may have accomplished in a little season what it takes us so many more years to perform if he hath done his labor well never needed reproof or correction and never uttered false doctrine it is well with hini him brother abraham has been true his testimony has been reliable and his doc trine and counsels have been pu pure re and his example as perfect as a mans could be he hath finished his bis work work and gone to his reward he is a wealthy man now for he hath earned eternal life the crown is his and no power can possibly deprive him of it he has kept the faith he has fought the fight and hath entered into rest what a blessed thing it will be for him to have rest he did not rest here he did not take sleep and quiet here but was nerved and upon a strain all ail the time to see what amount of labor he could carry in the interest of gods kingdom and in the interest of his brethren serving everybody waiting upon everybody preferring everybody every booy to himself take my yoke upon you and learn of me learn of the lord listen to the counsels of the holy spirit lor for thus we learn of the lord he hath planted in our hearts the holy spirit to be our con stant companion to bring to our minds what he has taught us in the past and what has been written to enlighten our minds as to the present and to show us things to come it will let us know i that which we ought to know of the fu ture and will give us testimony that god lives that there is a savior an and that jesus is the christ and that knowl edge will abide with us it is not enough that the son of god should give us this witness and testimony but it is absolutely necessary th that at that testimony dwell within us and be our constant companion while the holy ghost dwells in a man he will not be wicked he will not betray his brethren he will not he false in any particular but he will be lovable he will be devoted and faith ful and he will grow and advance in the favor of heaven we are under dobli ration gation to keep the companionship of holy ghost by its presence we learn ot of jesus take my yoke upon you and learn of me let the holy spirit I 1 abide in thy soul that you may learn i of D f jesus and always be learning of him not enjoy the holy spirit for a short season and then forsake it but bus have it dwell richly in thee all the day long if 1 we will do this it will moderate us when moderation is necessary it will nU 1 late us when stimulus is necessary it if 1 will restrain and encourage us give u us strength and vitality and enable us to endure that is is if we will not outrage it or disregard its monitions munitions ions y learn of me for I 1 am week meek and lowly in heart the great I 1 am who dwells a bove above the savior of the world declares tha s he is is meek and lowly can we not at af ford to be meek and lowly will we have trouble and difficulty between each A |
