Show IN KENTUCKY conference BUFORD ky june 1896 we have come together again in con ference and a happier band of elders it would be hard to meet our meetings meeting s were held in a large bowery the weather being only 98 degrees in the shade gshade on brother jewels place buford where there is a branch ot of the church our beloved president E S kimball of the southern states mission was with us at io 10 a in june botn our meetings commenced elder S A smith pre presiding iding the first four principles of the gospel were carefully and systematically taken up and explained by the elders duri during na our oar four meetings vs our dinners were like picnics to liberty Pi park salt lake city they were spread on the grass under tinder the trees where there was plenty of shade we elders would get stout if we could just have a few conferences like these every month it was a feast of good things all around after our conference meetings were over elder kimball gathered all the elders together and gave them instructions he advised the elders to keep on the first principles of the gospel faith repentance baptism and the laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost when holding meetings paul says I 1 faith cometh by hearing and hearin hearing by the word of god when the elders ers preach the word to these people they should teach them the foundation principles so that their faith may be like the house that was built on cherock the rock and andt the herain rain descended and the floods came and the winds ble wand beat upon that house and it if fell not for it was founded upon a rock 11 we can rothope not hope to instill faith in the hearts of men unless we have faith ourselves elder kimball read from president wilford woodruffs rs words where he says bays when he was preaching the gospel to the people they believed on him and his sayings elder kimball said in this lies the secret the holy ghost testifies to them that you are speaking toe the truth he told a beautiful parable about the elders pr preaching eachin g the gospel in the world he said the world is like an immense wheat field in which our one thousand elders are working the wheat in some places is is ripe and in others yet green england is ripe germany and the united states are ripening while russia is yet green our one thousand elders are now forth and reaping the harvest going ut the time will come when we will have ten thousand elders out in the field working he said the apostles of old preached the gospel without purse or scrip and christ said to them pro vide neither gold nor silver nor brass in your purses he told all the elders he would like them all to travel among this people entirely without money in their pockets so that they could depend upon the lord to raise up friends for them and if they would do this he prophesied that friends should be raised up to minister to their needs all the elders in this conference bore their mony to the truth ot of the gospel and promised to travel without purse and scrip so now the kentucky elders will travel hereafter absolutely and entirely without money both in the cities and in the country depending on the friends they make to minister to their needs in this conference we have twenty six bright energetic elders trying to follow instructions and working as the apostles of old without purse or scrip since last conference there have been sixty three baptisms meetings held and tracts distributed our desire is to jl progress ogress our conference is like an individual we learn a little day by day life is made of smallest fragments shade and sun sum hine bine work and play so may we with greatest profit learn a little every day I 1 elder orson S taylor of the virginia Tir ginia conference came over to visit relatives in kentucky and on his way home visited us at conference he and elder M spencer leave for utah tomorrow the following are the elders addresses stephen A smith and E J merrill hopkinsville Hop kinsville christian co kentucky G F ellsworth and A roylance henderson henderson co kentucky F E allred and 1 I C Canfield Canton trigg co kentucky F D richardson and A ipsen owensboro Owen daviess co kentucky D G miller and william anderson brandenberg meade co kentucky john C cutler jr and new elder to come lebanon marion co kentucky T martin and william king greens burg green co kentucky D J blake and L B pace bards town nelson co kentucky J J croshaw and D E jones springfield washington co kentucky J H hanson and N D kartchner huer columbia adair co kentucky A W platt and G A elizabethtown Elizabeth town hardin co kentucky J J tanner and N martineau camp beltsville belis belleville bells ville taylor co kentucky 1 E naylor and J J bowen hod mensville gens ville larue co kentucky yours truly STEPHEN A SMITH prest JOHN C CUTLER JR clerk |
