| Show conference IN ARKANSAS PIGGOTT clay co arkansas june ath 1896 the arkansas conference of the 16 indian territory mission was convened at the hedley school house at pollard Pollar dClay clay county at p m may ayd there were present on this occasion elder W D Bu buering wring secretary of the mission elder W E newman conference ference president J M knight and elders charles F solomon 1 I E aud and J L neilson meeting was called to order by elder solomon who spoke of the treatment the elders were now receiving compared with that of a few years past referd referring to the mobbing of elders 7 M holt zug and J I 1 shepard which occurred between six and seven years ago within a mite mile of the present locality elder newman occupied the remainder of the time speaking of the persecutions which the saints ot of former days had undergone and said it was the self ahme same spirit which prevailed against the saints of today may meeting commenced at JM X a m with an overflowing house the speakers on this occasion were elders neilson and bowring all confined their remarks to the first tour four principles of the gospel their words were sound and reasonable and such inch that none but prejudiced minds could reject the speakers at the afternoon services were elders newman and knight who s spoke p oke upon pre existence and salvation for the dead the speakers remarks were backed up by holy writ and the large audience was held spell bound until the close of the discourses A session was also held in the evening at which elder solomon occupied the time speaking upon the apostasy apo stacy from and restoration of the gospel may priesthood meeting was held n A letter from president andrew blied K kimball dball was read the contents were valuable and instructive to the elders elder bowring also gave the elders some very good instructions all elders expressed a feeling of satisfaction in their labors and a desire to go forward with a stronger determination in the future in the furtherance of the great latter day cause at p m we again assem assembled bied and had bad the pleasure of 0 listening to a very interesting discourse upon the resurrect tion by elder eider bowring the audience was large but the eloquence of the speakers remar remarks k held shed I 1 them in silence insolence the speaker closed invoking gods blessings udon all those who had so kindly entertained the elders and said that all should receive a just reward for their kindness benediction was offered which brought to a close the first conference held in AT arkansas kansas under the auspices of the latter day saints an excellent time was had and the spirit rested in rich abundance upon all the speakers the testimonies were strong and power auland seemed to fall from the speakers lips with the desired effect on the 46 evening of the we inter viewed the county officials who gave us perm permission to use the court house at piggott the county seat our attendance on this occasion was quite large most of the merchants and officials were present elder newman delivered a very plain and elaborate discourse upon the first principles of the gospel 1 all EF elders ders are at present enjoying reasonably good health although in the past some have been suffering from effect of the intense heat which is so i prevalent alent in the sunny south elders present addresses are J charles F solomon and james E sore son 9 pi piggott gott clay co arkansas john M knight ni ht and J L nielson denmark deum W white ite co 0 arkansas rk ansas CHARLES HARL F SOLOMON y JOHN M KNIGHT |
