Show Lancers bomb 87-5- 9 Falcons, One of Stan LAYTON Buchanans assistant coaches remarked as the coaching staff walked onto the court last Friday, its like the twilight zone out here, you never know which Layton team will show up. Fortunately for Layton, the vicsolid, tory team showed up against Clearfield last Friday night and it resulted in a 9 victory. Though Friday was a victorious night, it's been difficult to detect which way the Layton kids would go when they suit up to play. Buchanan terms it inconsistency, something he shakes his head at and says he has no cure for. e The victory breaks a losing streak for Layton and moves them to a 3 league record. Clearfield on the other hand, slid to with the loss and is in serious danger of missing one of the four spots it takes to get a ticket to the state tournament. Perhaps one reason for breaking out of the slump, was Laytons ability to get jacked up to play Buchanan thought Clearfield. that had a lot to do with the quick start and explosive spurts. Layton once moved out to a 6 lead in the first quarter and had Buchanan and his Lancers not confronted the referees for a wild series of fouls called on their team, Layton may have gone on and scored over 100 points on the night. But Buchanan said hed had enough, midway through the first quarter, so he purposely got up and yelled in the face of one referee to wake him up. Later Buchanan got up and ripped off his tie and threw it in the stands to his wife. All that commotion helped Clearfield back into the game as the Falcons proceeded to score eight or Davis Curtis Stoddard Davis Heather Peel 87-5- Top athletes tabbed for Reflex - Journal two-gam- KAYSVILLE Two Davis High athletes have earned honors as the Athletes of the Month for January. They include Heather Peel as the top female and Curtis Stoddard as the No. one male. Both will receive handsome plaques designed and produced by J & L Trophies and Engravings of Layton. Peel has been one of the brightest spots in Lady Darts basketball this winter. The junior forward is averaging between 16 and 18 points per game and recently sunk 25 in a game against Bear River. Heather can excite the crowd once in a while with a as well, showing her ability to shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. Peel is active in a number of other sports at Davis as well. She plays volleyball, tennis, soccer and performs with the track team. Currently the Lady Darts are 3 Layton, Kim Hill of Clearfield and Amber Poll of Clearfield. There were a number of fine January performers on the boys side, but Davis Stoddard was a little above the rest. A 0 forward, Stoddard worked harder during January to help his team to 0 start in league play. Even now the record is 2 and the men at Davis are tied for the region lead. Other top nominees for the female award were Karri Barnes of Dixon, Clearfields Bracken Reflex-Journ- al non-leag- three-point- er 3-- in league play. 6-- 4-- 5-- During the January stretch, and despite his height disadvantage, Stoddard was the Darts' leading rebounder and averaged over 12 points per game offensively. Bountiful High coach, Mike Hall, called Stoddard one of the finest basketball players Ive seen at his height. Besides basketball, Curtis also enjoys playing football where he played on both sides of the line last fall. Other top candidates for the January award were Laytons Rod Larsen and Davis Jeff Pearson. 4-- 2-- 5 16-- cures Darts Winning e losing streak two-gam- The victory helped Davis mainKAYSVILLE Winning is sometimes the best therapy there is tain a share of the Region Four lead for a team headed in the wrong with both Viewmont and Boundirection and last Friday night in tiful. Three teams automatically qualify for the state tournament from Region Four and the fourth must playoff with another region. Davis probably has the toughest road to hoe of the three tied for the league lead. The Darts must face both Viewmont and Bountiful and still must travel to East. Fortunately for Davis, both the Viewmont and Bountiful games are at home. In the win over Woods Cross, Robison felt his players played hard from start to finish, except for a short lapse in the fourth quarter. Davis led 5 after one quarter and were ahead 9 at halftime. The third quarter proved to be the killer as Davis went out in front, 22-1- 40-2- 62-4- 1. The Darts saw their high scoring forward Jeff Pearson come alive again as the senior scored 35 points in the victory. He connected on 10 field goals and made 14 ot 15 freethrows. Pearson moved a whole lot better on Friday, said Robison. The only other Davis players in double figures were Brian Emery with 14 points and Brian Olson with 10. Sometimes a coach has to do things like that, but at the same time, you cant let it get out of hand. I think it woke the guys in the striped-shirt- s up, that we werent going to take it all night, said Buchanan. But despite the woes the referees caused early and the departure of Stan Banks (who was saddled with four personals in the first period alone), this was one of those nights in the twilight zone that Layton was supposed to come out and they did just that. The Lancers got a tremendous boost from both Rod Dixon and Rob Trujillo in the second period and Layton gradually pulled away from a Clearfield team which couldn't shoot with any kind of .consistency and was constantly committing mistakes. At one time the Layton team held a 1 lead, but behind the scoring bursts from Dixon and Trujillo, the Lancers went ahead 16-1- 22-2- 37-2- 4. Clearfields Curtis Hulse and Bracken Larsen were able to keep teh game from becoming a first half blow-ou- t. Early in the fourth quarter. An Albert Chappel jumper gave Layton a 3 lead. The evening was a tough one to swallow for Craig Hansen and his team to swallow who have now lost three games in a row. Buchanan will be hoping this is the same team that meets both Bonneville on Tuesday and Weber on Friday. Clearfield on the other hand, has to come up with victories over Weber, Box Elder and Bonneville to get back in the state tournament picture. i I rvf 1 Layton Rec. oners sport Layton City Recreation will offer a B Co-E- d volleyball league.
