Show FEBRUARY 3, 1987 Braves conquer Darts By KEITH DUNCAN We would BOUNTIFUL have lost to anyone the way we said Davis John Robiplayed, was just one of those It son. nights. Previously unbeaten Davis High School sputtered and stuttered last Friday night en route to a 0 loss to Bountiful High, thus dropping them at 1 into a first place tie with 55-5- 4-- the Braves after the first round of Region Four basketball play. On Tuesday of this week, the Darts were to have traveled to Highland for a rematch with the Rams. That contest was slated for 7:30 p.m. On Friday of this week, Davis is to return home for a meeting with the Woods Cross Wild-Cel- ts The Darts just couldnt get it going against Bountiful, never obtaining the lead and only sharing The Braves perhaps it once at could have run away with the game, but they too didnt post their best effort. Both teams shot a miserable 42 percent from the field for the night. Bountifuls Mike Hall called it a great defensive effort from both teams. His team was successful in carrying out their gameplan which was to pack it in tight to stop Curtis Stoddard and fly out to stop Jeff Pearson, that according to Bountifuls center, Chad Rigby. We did well in packing the zone in to stop Stoddard and also did well to fly out and stop Pearson, said Rigby, Wed worked all week long in packing that thing in because Davis has been successful 4-- 4. in going inside. But beating Davis is no easy task. Those guys come ready to play. Davis always tries to look for the back pick over the top with (Jeff) Pearson usually doing the most damage on it. But I dont think they got one of them all night. Were getting better, said Covey. This win will really give us a boost. Bountiful travels to East this Lancers fall at Roy, Falcons suffer also Both Clearfield and Layton boys basketball teams lost their games last Friday, a couple of de- feats that were hard to swallow. Clearfield lost a 1 game to Bonneville, but had the Lakers on the ropes all night. Layton meanwhile, fell at Roy to fall to 2 in league play. Layton lost the game their worst defeat of the year in region action. 75-7- Lancers all night was a trapping press which enabled Stan Buchanans club to keep the score close. The Braves werent exactly ripping the nets with high percentages. One of the Darts problems on Friday night was their ball control. Davis threw the ball away 23 times compared to eight for the Braves. Those 23 turnovers resulted in 21 Bountiful points, which hurt. Cahoon came out real quick to start the fourth quarter, hitting four points to give Bountiful a 2 lead. In fact Bountiful continued to maintain a fairly comfortable lead until the Braves started launching shots. Once long ahead Bountiful saw its lead as Pearson got hot. The cut to 5 senior forward scored six straight points there and ended the last quarter with 10 points. For the night he concluded things with a game high 21 points. But the final quarter ended how it started as Cahoon hit four straight freethrows to ice the win 38-3- 14-1- 2 42-3- 51-4- 2, 28-2- 28-2- Stoddard was perhaps Davis most valuable player on Friday as he ripped down 11 rebounds and scored 15 points. The hard working senior played aggressively from start to finish. Bountifuls Hall commented after the game about Stoddard, saying, Hes as fine a high school player for his size as Ive seen in a long time. Stoddard shot an amazing five or six from the field but converted only five of nine freethrow attempts. Davis guardline went only one for ten from the field for the entire game. Davis ended up outrebounding Bountiful, 32 to 26. We got beat, plain and simple, said Davis Robison after the game. We couldnt have beaten anyone the way we played. And Bountiful deserves the credit, at least quite a bit of it. You know, after playing games during the course of a season, youre bound to have nights like we had. "In fact it was about as good a defensive game as youll see. Davis made it tough for us to get our shots inside, despite their lack of size. It feels good to beat Davis, but we know it wont be a piece of cake at their place. This whole thing could turn out to be something like last season. Bountiful led after one quarter, The Braves were getting most of their points inside as Jim Walton, Rigby and Cahoon went aggressively to the basket. Stoddard on the other hand, kept Davis in the game with six first quarter points, playing as well inside as anyone. Bin as the game progressed, Davis offensive scheme did nothing but sputter.
