The condition is premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which, the program director says, strikes over 50 percent of Utah women. It is not a new problem," says Dr. Steven Lowell Johnson. What is new is the realization that PMS is a true disease and one that is very prevalent. An estimated 0 percent of Utah women require some sort of medical assistance in coping. Unfortunately, many women have in the past suffered in silence." The hospitals program varies from some traditional practices at medical centers and hospitals. Floyd Morgan, associate executive director of Humana Hospital Davis North, says the price of the program is "significantly lower than similar programs and is individualized for the specific participant. To introduce the program, Dr. Johnson will hold a monthly free seminar to explain new research and treatment techniques. At that point, women who feel they can benefit from the program will sessions and, if needed, special continue with four follow-u- p after-car- e treatment. PMS is not one disease or one disorder, says Dr. Johnson, but instead a manifestation of symptoms caused by physiological changes. In fact, more than 150 emotional changes and symptoms have been attributed to PMS. But research does show that treatment can help if not cure the condition. Its frankly sad that so many women have suffered for so long when there is help available. Dr. Johnson, a specialist in obstetrics, gynecology and infertility, has appeared at numerous seminars to explain new PMS research. He graduated from Brigham Young University and the University of Utah College of Medicine. Comments from PMS sufferers, he says, range from being in outer darkness one week of each month to confessions like, I cannot believe I did what I did! The interference with normal thoughts and activities often create feelings of guilt and frustration.
