Layton was down 2 after one 1 at halftime. stop and trailed We were out of the flow of things in the first half and 1 had to get on the kids at halftime, but we were playing enough defense to find ourselves down by only two at the half. We found ourselves down by 10 points one time in the third trap and turned the ball over quarter but we tried a three straight times to cut the lead down to two points heading into the fourth quarter. But we got moving in the final eight minutes and could have actually blown the game open had we hit our foul shots like were capable of doing, said Coach Stan Buchanan. The Layton coach emphasized he isnt so worried about what other teams have, but worries more about how his own club reacts to situations. Were creating our own breaks which is what we must do in order to win, said Buchanan. Layton finds itself winding up the first half of the league schedule against Roy this Friday night. Bonneville, the league will play Clearfield. leader at The Lancers, loaded with young players, appear very loose and are a team which is having fun. if they continue to win and keep pace with the Lakers, the spirited Layton team might have an edge on the more experienced Bonneville team down the road. Basically this years team is the same group of Lancers that lost many heartbreaking defeats a year ago. Now it looks as if Buchanans club has turned things around. The Lancers lost twice to Clearfield last year, both games in overtime fashion. They also fell to Bonneville by one and two points respectively. Now theyve beaten Clearfield and taken the 87 Lakers to overtime. These kids know what heartbreak was like last year and theyre doing their best to turn things around. 16-1- By KEITH DUNCAN 33-3- LAYTON Layton Highs Wes Nance said he finally started to stop thinking about it and just started playing. The result was a effort against Weber High last Friday night which helped his Layton teammates to a good victory. The win boosted Laytons region mark to enough for sole possession of second place in Region One. A lot of playing basketball, or any sport, is to letting things happen themselves. I got in the rut of thinking too much about my shooting in our first three games and it hurt me, said Nance. The junior forward shrugged off his struggling act however against Weber and notched more points on Friday than he had scored in three previous games. I think my teammates obtained a little more confidence in me after last Friday, said Nance, I knew I had it in me all the time. Nances presence was felt throughout the entire game, but was a force to reckon with as the seconds ticked away to start the third quarter. Weber had built up an eight point lead but Nance kept Layton in the game with eight straight points through one stretch of the third stanza. That stretch in the third quarter was a big confidence booster, said the happy Nance. Were having fun, the Layton player continued to say, We joke around at times, but we know when it is time to get serious too. Our No. 1 goal is to win the region title and earn ourselves a trip to the state tournament. Its been a long time since a basketball team has won a region title from here and wed like to keep on thinking weve got a chance. Against the Lakers, Clearfield will not only need to be sharp from the freethrow line, but in every facet of points for the night. Clearfield also received some valuable help from center Bill Spangenthal who chopped in 16 points. Curtis Hulse was the only other player in double figures with 10 points. The game was a little closer than the score last Friday, as Clearfield 1 led after one quarter, were behind 37-3- 3 at halftime and were back on top 50-4- 9 after three full 23-2- quarters. We wanted to get the ball inside, said Clearfield head coach Craig Hansen. The shots we took were mostly from the inside and that is why we got fouled a lot. Lancer wrestlers finish third at tournament Layton Highs wrestling team had a fine performance last weekend at the Pleasant Grove tournament where Tom Moore (left) placed third and Greg Loveless (right) won the title at 138. Layton as a team placed third overall, by far their best performance. Taking second were Mike Barnes, Mike Brown and Tyler Sessions. Darts breed intensity; paves way to By KEITH DUNCAN The rest of ReKASYVILLE gion Four might wonder if folks in this town make a point to breed fine athletes, seemingly an attribute at Davis High School. Such isn't the case, but you have to wonder if intensity genes are a little more active in these parts by t the way the kids get after the competition. The intensity drive was turned up three or four times the usual this past Friday night as John Robisons basketball team turned back a good The Leopards, East team, one of the teams picked in pre78-6- 5. season to battle for the region crown, came to Kaysville to pick up a win and it took an intensified effort on the part of the Davis kids to turn that bid back the other way. The victory propelled the Darts to a perfect 0 record in league 4-- play and leaves them atop the standings all alone. Viewmont High gained an impressive victory over Bountiful on Friday to knock the Braves from the unbeaten ranks. Perhaps the game of the year, so far anyway, in Region Four takes place this Friday night in Bountiful when the Darts take on the Braves. The game last Friday against the Leopards was nip and tuck until the final few minutes when Davis sank their freethrows as East tried desperately to get back in the game. But up until the final two minutes, it 4-- 0 mark was all Davis could do to keep up with a determined East team. About the intensity displayed, Davis guard York Major commented, Were small and there is no way we can beat other teams unless we hustle. Our objective is to get the ball inside, which is what Coach Robison wants. Youve got to think youre aggressive and then be aggressive to battle bigger teams consistently close to the basket."
