Epoxy Resins were introduced to Hill in 11)54 following the attendance of Mr. Green to the Renite factory school where he studied the use and characteristics of these resins as applied to tooling. He was later instrumental in obtaining the services of representatives from the Renite factory to demonstrate the use of their product at Hill. The resins could almost be referred to as miracle materials because of the many and different ways they can be used. Nearly Equal to Steel The Epoxy Resins are dimensionally and chemically stable, light in weight, not affected by moisture or temperature changes, resistant to acid, alkali, grease, and solvent action. Easy to patch if damaged, and will bond to any material. In strength these resins are nearly equal to steel. Some of the specific applications to which these resins are being put is in the making of forming dies, drop hammer dies, power brake dies, molds for plastics, surface plates, spot welding jigs, and fiberglass trim timplates. Epoxy resins are manufactured in many forms. They are available as a liquid, a powder, or a solid and may be applied by painting, spraying, molding, casting, or may be built up by laminating with fiberglass and other materials. Sometimes Mixed With Metal The plastic itself serves as a binder and is sometimes mixed with other materials as a filler such ns steel filings or aluminum filings. In use the plastic is mixed with a hardening agent which causes a chemical reaction producing heat. For this reason it is called a thermosetting plastic but requires no external heat or pressure to make it set. well-know- n of the motion picture family.
