The pro- grams are conducted by the na-- I tional office of the Association in New York, 55 state and regional heart associations and more than 350 local chapters in all parts of the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Alaska. Established in 1924 as a professional society, the American Heart Association was reorganized in 1918 as a voluntary health agency in which the general public and medical science, in effect, became equal partners in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. Financial support for this partnership comes entirely from contributions by the public, particularly during ' the annual Heart Fund campaign, conducted throughout the month of February. Because new knowledge is the greatest need in the struggle against heart and circulatory diseases, the Associations program gives highest priority to research support. At least half of all funds received by the National Office are allocated to research. Affiliates Page home of Ethel Jensen.
