If baby had his I's f y. way sometime during the year, it would certainly be during National Baby Week. And he would probably request meat added to his feedings because .baby agrees with nutritionists that meat is owm just what the doctor ordered for infant diets. Just a few years ago, you never heard much about feeding meats to babies unless your doctor especially recommended it. And then you had to laboriously scrape babys meat from a handsome steak. Then Swift & Company developed specially prepared meats for babies. And as a part of this project, began an extensive research program to provide complete clinical information on the effect of meat in the infant diet. Pediatricians and nutritionists in different parts of the country began research studies at universities and hospitals, feeding specially prepared strained meats to babies. They wanted to find the answers to such questions as: Can babies digest use the meat?, inDo babies and Are nutrients meat?, there any benefits from giving meat to babies? Typical of these research studies was one directed by Dr. Ruth Leverton at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Leverton fed v y f. She found that strained meat added to the infant formula increases the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells in babys blood. Dr. Thomas Sisson, at the University of Rochester, answered the question of digestion when he fed strained meats to premature infants. These premature infants thrived on their meat supplemented diet, showing that even their less fully developed digestive systems were tolerating and using the nutrients in meat. Another benefit from feeding Swift meat to babies was shown in a study by Dr. Howard Jacobs at St. Vincents Hospital in Chicago. He found that the meat-fe- d infant is more resistant to infection and particularly to that annoying respiratory infection, the common cold.
