Wallace F. Bennett (It., Utah.) At his request, language was written into the Commerce Department Appropriations hill to the effect that if the department's field offices in Reno, Cheyenne, Phoenix and Albuquerque remain open, so will the office in Salt Lake City. To eliminate cost, Sen. Dennett specified fund cuts from larger offices to make up the difference. If congress cuts department funds, it may he recessary to close all hut large regional offices, he said, hut theres no sense in closing offices in Salt Lake City just to leave them open in Reno which is near San Francisco and Cheyenne which is even nearer Denver, especially when the congressional report specified that as many offices as possible be left open by tutting the big ones instead of dosing the small ones. e He pointed out tnat planning envisions increased utilization of local Chambers of Commerce in supplying information processed and released by such field offices, hut until procedures can he woiked out, present practice will prevail. Sen. Bennett also backed a proposal before the Senate Appropriations committee which would continue commissary rights for civilian employes at Dugway Proving The House committee Grounds. cut off commissary privileges which, at some posts are abused, but Sen. Bennett asked to make it possible for Dugway workers to have commissary privileges if they could not get the necessities of life at a reasonable price and within a reasonable distance. Many employes at the Proving Grounds told the senator that they had to travel 50 miles to Tooele to obtain food, so he asked the Department of Defense to authorize long-rang- commanding officer at Dug-- j way to open the commissary to such ankers on a standby emer-- I gcncy basis until the bill goes through noimal legislative channels during the next few days.
