Show OCTOBER 25, 1952. THE JOURNAL ft Dean N. Clayton Points to Opponent's "Record"- This is the record of the Democratic candidate for District Attorney in the Second Judicial District since September 11, 1950, relative to contested cases involving major crimes. RAPE: Only One conviction out of 17 cases. ROBBERY: Not one conviction for robbery. BURGLARY: 4 out of 7 wrongdoers escaped conviction. CARNAL KNOWLEDGE: 6 out of 7 wrongdoers escaped conviction. GRAND LARCENY: 8 out of 11 escaped conviction. MANSLAUGHTER: 2 out of 4 got away without being convicted. ASSAULT WITH DEADLY WEAPON: 10 out of 13 avoided adequate punishment. , It has paid to plead not guilty because out of 90 cases where this was done, my opponent has only convicted 20 of the offense with which they were charged. He dismissed 31 of the 90 cases without even tryto ing convict the wrongdoer. He has made deals in 23 cases all of which involved major crimes. In those 23 cases he dismissed the felony complaint which requires imprisonment in .the state penitentiary and permitted the wrongdoer to plead guilty1 to a misdemeanor and escape the consequences of his act by paying a fine or spending a few days in the county jail. The time has come to end this incompetent, wishy-washbumbling type of prosecution. This record has been carefully checked, and I am. presenting the facts. I have challenged my opponent to debate the accuracy of these statements and to defend his record, if he can, in the newspaper, over the radio, or in front of any impartial forum he refuses to accept my challenge. The office of District Attorney should be a fighting one, with no favorites and no deals. It has not been such.
