Show J L' ' JULY 5, 1952 What They Are Saying in Washington Senator Arthur V. Watkins It has taken nearly three years but it appears a distinct possibility now that Congees will approve ' funds for the Weber Basin project. Late last week the Senate Committee subcom-mitte- e con-structi- studying the Interior partments appropriation on De- bill for fiscal 1953, included $1,350,000 in the bill for initial construction work on the first phase of the Weber Basin project. I am .confident that this will be approved by the full Committee as well as by the Senate. Since the Senate bill will differ from the measure as approved by the House, it will be necessary for Senate conference Committee members to urge House conferees to accept the appropriation. If the House members refuse to accept, the Senate amendment, it could again cut off these funds for a most meritorious project. Weber First Phase This appropriation would provide funds for general investigative work, for drawing plans and or some initial construction as follows: Enlarginent of Pine View Daml and Reservoir, $100,000; Wanship Dam and Reservoir, $500,000; Gate-- f way Canal, $500,000; Davis $100,000, and miscellaneous! drainage, etc., $50,000. With the addition of the Weber acqueduct and the Stoddard diversion works, both of which require4 shorter construction periods, thJ ' projects herein named comprise' the first phase of the propect whicl will require five years to complete. Funds Urged It will- be remembered that the House of Representatives refused to include any construction money., for Weber Basin in the 1953 ap- propriation bill. When the billy came to the Senate, I urged thej Committee to include construction money. The analysis which I sub-- j mitted to the Committee elearlyj showed the need for the project and fully justified the approprian tion of funds.
