Words of the Wise Men must know that In the theatre of mans life it re-maln- eth only to God and the angels to be lookers-o- n. (Bacon) piomise for dollar savings. Many of the States larger lakes are infested with this common trash fish, the chub. The supply presented appears limitless. They have previously been used as a fish food, but only after cooking. In such form they proved useful only as an occasional feed. The present cost of these fish as they come from the seiners is one cent per pound, as compared to meat at five cents per pound. The probable savings in cost of hatchery fish food now appears tremendous if continued feeding of raw chub proves as successful as it now seems that it will. Increased seining of these trash fish from trout waters will result in a d betterment of the total fishing picture, as it relates to this experiment. Credit is due Commissioner K. E. Bullock for first suggesting the possibility of such feeding. At his suggestion, he, Director J. Perry Egan and Dave Wright, Superintendent of Hatcheries, made a trip into Idaho to investigate results of ground raw chub feeding at a private hatchery. Knowledge gained there led to the present experiment at Midway. The first planting of Chukar partridge in more than token numbers was made in Nine Mile Canyon east of Price during the past week. Two hundred birds, half of either, sex, were released after two to three days of orientation to their new habitat by use of a large enclosed pen placed at the point of liberation. It is the plan of the Department to make another such plant in about the same number at a chosen point in Box Elder . County this year. Thus begins the Chukar story in Utah. It is the hope of the Department and many leading sportsmen of the State that this story will find a happy ending a few years hence with this fine two-fol- 20-m- m. 6 tbsp. finely ohopped almonds or pecans, 6 tbsp. sugar, xk c. melted butter and Vi e. light cream. Experience of other western states has shown the Chukar to he very much a bird of mystery. L:ttle is yet proven as to best methods for raising, handling, and releasing to proper habitat.. When experience of other states showed the Chukar to be a lover of rugged semi-ari- d terrain, it was decided to make the necessary expenditures to acquire a brood stock and begin experiments with a view of establishing this fine game bird here. It is believed that there is an of suitable land area here for establishment of the Chukar. They do not normally frequent cultivated land, so should not become a problem bird as the pheasant has in many of our farming areas. With the above in view, the State Game Bird Farm at Price was turned over to this project about a year ago. A brood of Chukars was purchased and placed there, which was later augmented by further brood birds hatched from eggs purchased and cared for at the Price Game Farm. They were carried through the winter and this spring began the first mating, egg laying, brooding and hatching of Chukars in quantity in the Departments experience. Results of this year of work with these birds are valuable experiences in the handling of them, plus over 2,000 young birds hatched at the farm this year to carry into next year as brood stock. With reasonable success next year, we should find upwards of ten thousand young birds ready for release to the various areas of the State being chosen as most suitable for planting. The present first plants are being made from birds of this years brood stock. They will be very closely watched. If proven successful, they will be supplemented in the spring. As these are the first plants in quantity, close observance wil act as a guide for future plantings. The Commission members and Director Egan are giving this work their full attention and encouragement. It is felt that our pheasant population is near saturation over the areas of the State suitable for this fine bird. If the game bird hunters of Utah are to have future hunting then some such new bird as the Chukar partridge must be successfully introduced. Supervisor of Game Management, Harold S. Crane, heads the whole project. Clifton M. Green-halgProject Leader of upland assisted birds, by Lynn R. Nielson, Assistant Leader, are carryforward the actual field work ing and study. Ray B. Hyatt, Superintendent of the Price Game Farm, has forwarded the hatchery end of the experiment. Probably the brightest note in the whole experiment to date has been the remarkably small loss of the over two thousand birds hatched at the farm. To date, only ten birds have been lost.
