J I LAYTON, DAVIS COUNTY, UTAH The way things have a habit of getting done in Davis county bespeaks a spirit of industry and cooperation that merits praise and commendation and that sets an example toward which the entire nation may well look in times when the twin philosophies of Something for Nothing, and The Most for the Least, might seem to be gaining ascendancy. As a case in point we refer to the new recreation hall cow being constructed as an addition to the Kaysville First ward chapel. This is a fairly large project, costing some $120,-00and the manner in which it was brought about and activated stands in contradiction to the theory that the pioneer is on the decline. spirit of independence and 0, self-relian- ce , The people of, the ward decided that a new recreation hall was necessary; There were no cries for outside help, no frantic scramblings for an easy way out, no shuffling for a method whereby they might get something for nothing. The ward merely rolled up its collective sleeve and went to work. Volunteer workers showed up on the job in the evening, after their regular days work was finished. Each eve-- . ning found a crew of from four to fourteen men giving freely of their time, skill and strength, and the church structure graduallykrose, taking form and shape. . Ward functions, Relief society bazaars, M. I. A. dances, picnics and carnivals were held and the proceeds turned over to the building fund. Ward members made contributions according to their individual means. Thus the money was raised to finance this venture, The building was started last September and will be fin- khed before the year is out. When finished it will not be just a fine gathering place for the ward members, it will also be an edifice of testimonial, an eloquent symbol in brick and concrete f the spirit of a people united in labor ancTaccom- i u i r- - ' l - ; - V . plishment; ; The Kaysville First ward recreation hall is not an iso lated or singular case. It is just one single instance of the aany such projects undertaken by communities throughout the county, ' Not long ago ground-breakin- g ceremonies were held for : a new church to service the Layton Fourth L. I). S. ward. The cost of this structure was estimated at $1 10,000, no small project for a relatively small group of people, in modest means. The Layton Fourth ward project is a repetition of the Kaysville project. Church doings to raise money, and volunteer workers to turn the money to account. Last week 60 volunteer workers showed up on the Layton ward job. An average of 15 workers each evening, put in some three hours, quitting when it is too dark to see. If there is any truth in the opinion that people have lost the stalwart characteristics of their forebearers, and are now mainly concerned in getting something for nothing, it certainly is not apparent here. Across the county, from Clinton to Bountiful, the story has been repeated time and time again. A group of people decide they need a new church. Building plans are drawn up and the area is marked off. Neighbor joins with neighbor in a pooling of energy and skill. Sometime there is a temporary halt when funds are unexpectedly exhausted, but the different organizations go into action with their recreational proj- ects, and besides providing everyone with a good time, they accumulate money for another spurt of construction. Before long the new building stands finished, and it truly belongs to the ward members. It was their labor, their money, their indeed, have a habit time and sacrifice that built of getting done. These projects are ultimate examples of people getting together and collectively doing something for themselves. It evidences the predominence of a healthy,' forward-lookinand industrious attitude which will surely lead the county forward to greater' accomplishments and broader development in all lines of endeavor. The prevailing spirit so manifest in these community church projects is one of the countys greatest assets, and a prime factor in its progress. It will manifest itself in other things that make an area a better place in which to live in better homes, more fruitful lands, and more thriving industries. oft-express- -- ed -- it.-Thin- gs, -- g, , ' |
