Show ' i I LAYTOY HAMS VOLUME TWENTY ONE COl'M. I TAIL SEPTEMBER 22. 1919 NUMBER Workmen Begin New Strotch On S. L. To Farmington Job Davis County Gets BOUNTIFUL Some 50 workmen for E. K. Strong Construction Co , Springville, started pouring e concrete Tuesday for the new stretch of highway which wil make U. S. highway 91 a four lane highway all the way irom Salt Lake City to Farmington Tuberculosis five-mil- two-lan- e junction. The project was started in the fall of 1948 after U. S. 91 had been given the title of death strip. Only 16,000 yards of road fill material from gravel pits along the west side of the Wasatch range could be hauled in until the unusually severe winter halted all work until this spring. Steady Stream Since that time, a steady stream of trucks has been carrying fill material for the new road and drainage culverts and bridges have been erected. Altogether around 285,000 yards of fill material were hauled in by E. K. Strong Co., which had a $238,000 contract for the grading and drainage. The contract for the paving was awarded recently to the same company, which submitted a $277,000 bid. It will be the first concrete highway in the state where type 2 cement is used exclusively. This type of cement, at the Devils Slide plant produced in Utah, creates much less heat when setting and has a low alkali content Air is being forced into the mixture to make it even more durable and prevent cracking. Absence ot cracks wil make it less liable to damage from frezing and thawing Expansion Joints Expansion joints across the highway are being made at noon and night, which will mean will be between 250 and 300they ft., aPrt; A center construction will be filled with asphalt joint at a later date. The company is using a e screening and finishing machine for the work, along with a yaw and one quarter concrete mixer ; The sand and gravel is coming from the Whitehill Sand and Gravel Co., North Salt Lake. The finished paving will be dragged with burlap to give it a slightly roughened finish. The job is expected to take until the end of October provided the weather remains moderate. PLAGE CHANGED Dr. Dilworth Walker Dilworth Walker, dean of the college of business, professor and head of the department of economics of the University of Utah, will be guest speaker of the Bountiful Lions dub at their next regular meeting, Monday night. According to Supt. Elmer J. llartvigsen this amounts to almost six and per cent more students than were enrolled last year. This survey shows a greater increase than was anticipated. Stoker, School, the most overcrowded school in the county, had the biggest increase with fifteen per cent. Clinton and South Bountiful came next with more than fourteen per cent increase, Stoker School now uses three rooms in the basement of the First ward chapel. A new elementary school in Bountiful, now under construction, is expected to relieve the crowded condition. Three schools in the county which showed decreases in enrollment were the North Davis Junior High School, Clearfield Elementary School, and Syracuse Elementary School. ordinance. All garbage after that date will be hauled to a dumping site in Woods Cross, across the highway west of the Bountiful Motor-YTheater Acordmg to Thcrice Duncan, board member, the site is near the old Hatch Brick Works. Hauling date by the Centerville town truck will be the last Saturday each month, the same as under the old system. Individuals mav liuul their own junk to the site, but it must be hauled on a Saturday, Mr. Duncan said. Allen Tingey, who drives the truck, has requested that residents in the north part of town, including those in the new annex, put their trash out as early as posible on the last Saturday. It will be easier for Mr. Tingey if he begins his route there and work southward. Rat infestation in the present dumping site has endangered the town water suply, the reason for the change. The dump site is near the reservoir, and there is danger of the water being poluted and causing an epidemic. The area will be closed off Oct. and the remaining junk will e destroyed and covered.
