This rare fungus is very distinctive and can completely devastate a tomato planting. With the moisture that we have been receiving lately there is a good chance that some of the tomato plants in the gardens will become infected with powdery mildew. This disease can destroy the entire tomato crop, therefore it is expedient that it be recognized early and control measures be initiated before the disease advances too far. - . disease can be most easily recognized by the distinct yellow spots on the lower leaves, as the infection progresses the yellow spots die and turn The imb O fy-vTO- Wgoogmogq USPS 328-40- Published every Thursday at Manti, Utah. The foliage on severely infected plants will suddenly wilt and turn brown but remain attached to the main stem. Fruit on plants with the advanced stages of the disease will be exposed to sunburn but are still safe to eat. It has been estimated that this disease has caused a loss in Utah as high as 2 million dollars damage to the tomato industry. This does not include the plants that have been affected in many of the home gardens. Control measures should be initiated with protective fungicides as soon as any yellow spots are observed on the lower leaves. The following fungicides should provide good control if applied early and regularly: Sulphur dust or sprays. Sulphur may cause fruit or leaf injury if applied when temperatures exceed 90 F. Benlate (benomyl) Applications should be made every 0 days for sulfur and every 4 days for Benlate. There are several other diseases of tomatoes which can cause death or noor growth of plants. Therefore you should examine closely the plants befoie applying chemicals. To my knowledge this disease has not been identified in Sanpete County. Other diseases that you should be on the lookout for are early blight and verticillium Wilt. 10-1- 35 S. Main, Manti, Utah 84642. Max E.
